    Howdy!
I have some divx files I edited with quicktime and when I saved them, quicktime put them in a mov container (i.e., they are now .mov files). My philips dvd player does not recognize these files. They are still divx files wrapped in a mov container so there must be some way of converting them back to a .avi format without haveing to reencode. Quicktime took only 20 seconds or so to change it to mov so I'm thinking there must be another app (mac or pc) that will just as quickly change it back. If not, some thoughts on how to edit divx files on a mac would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, export in quicktime (movie to divx avi) reencodes the video and takes hours for each video . It shouldn't need to be reencoded. The vidoe is already divx. It's just wrapped in a quictime .mov container.

If quicktime can change it to .mov in less than a minute, it seems reasonable to assume there should be a quick way of changing it back.

  4. Ikay, this may be stupid, but have you tried renaming the extension? .mov => .avi

Yeah just rename the extension - this even works for older wmv files as well (msmpeg4) to play them on a DVP642.

I just got this player and I have some MPEG-4 videos but with AAC audio. Let us know, mekronk, if renaming the extension works. I would try it now but I'm not home.

AAC audio won't work - needs to be mp3 (VBR doesn't play so well) or AC3 from my tests.

Renaming the extension to .avi was one of the first things I tried. It didn't work for me. In fact, if I remember correctly, when I looked at the folder using the dvd player (philips dvp642), two of each file showed up. If someone else tries it and it works, I'd love to hear about it. I'm not at home right now, but I think the codec used is divx 3.11

It seems like it should be a trivial thing, but I've looked everywhere for a solution. I thought maybe ffmpegx would work if I used passthrough for both video and audio, but that created a huge and unreadable file. The closest I've come to a solution is the app Divx Tool, which asked if I wanted to fix the file by changing it from .mov to .avi, but the app is still beta and that doesn't seem to be implemented yet.

Any other ideas? I'd sure appreciate a fix.

  9. What about changing the file type with a resource editor? Would that make a difference?
