    Hello,

It CAN be. It depends on how high of a bitrate you use. You'll have to decide that.

    Virtualdub is a good choice

If its a typical movie a 2 disc xvid will be far better quality than a 2 disc SVCD......PERIOD, plus you aint encoding borders (or hacking the poor movie to pieces to fill the screen area).

Most of the time it is. It all comes down to the length of the movie and the video bitrate really.

Virtualdub is a good program for editing DivX AVI files, not for encoding DVD IFO and VOB files. I'm sure that Virtualdub doesn't recognise VOB or IFO files. You can however, create a script file of the video and WAV audio in order to encode with Virtualdub.

You can download other programs aswell that convert straight from DVD IFO and VOB to a DivX AVI file. Thats if you would prefer to do it that way.

FYI, VirtualDub-MPEG2 or VirtualDubMod can open your vobs directly.

I wouldn't open them directly though. I'd use AVISynth scripts and DVD2AVI to frameserve into it (only if you want to get your hands dirty). Or just use AutoGK, Dr Divx or SimpleDivX if you want a no-brainer.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. I personally would recommend FairUse Wizard for either XVID or DIVX. It is very easy to use and can be set to full or semi automatic and with or without advanced settings. I primarily encode to DIVX for compatibility with my stand alone players. However, the program has XVID "built-in" because it was considered superior to DIVX (uses your external DIVX codec). Either way, the program saves files into projects and requires alot of free hard disk space. Encoding can take 2 to 4 hours with 2 passes on 2+ hour movies. I've been able to get seven 2+ hour movies onto 1 DVD with pretty good (enough for me) quality. The same movies are all under the 700MB limit I set in the program, averaging 590MB each.
I have not used the programs mentioned above so I can not comment on them or compare them to FairUse Wizard.

  10. you should try AOA DVD Ripper,it can copy your favorite DVD movies to AVI (DivX, Xvid), VCD (MPEG-1) and SVCD (MPEG-2) formats. You can download it from this link:http://www.dvdxcopy-software.com/aoa-dvd-ripper/

Yeah, AoA DVD Ripper is quite good. Do some price comparison first, thought. I got mine at 10% off (http://www.deprice.com/aoadvdripper.htm), but I am pretty confident you can find it even cheaper if you froogle it or check out pricegrabber.com, shopping.com and the likes. eBay might be a good idea too.

You can't compare these two, as DivX is a video codec, SVCD is a video disc format. Even if (as I understand you do) you mean "DivX encoded video", it's still just digital video.
You might do a comparision between DivX video at a given bitrate and resolution, and mpeg2 encoded video at the same bitrate and resolution - and DivX (or "any" mpeg4 codec for that matter) would win.
