    I've got an older Hauppauge WinTV PCI card (with FM) that I put into my new-ish Athlon 2600 (on an Asus A7V8X). I have a DVD burner and Pinnacle Studio 9, so I'm hoping to be able to capture video (either from cable/broadcast or from old VHS tapes). I also have a copy of PowerVCR II from Cyberlink.

    But here's the problem, or should I say "problems": (And yes, I have done quite a bit of searching to find similar problems/solutions here, but no luck.)

    * I can capture from within Pinnacle (after upgrading to 9.3.5), and edit within there (nuke commercials etc.), but I can't schedule recordings, and it often freezes my computer;

    * I can capture within WinTV2000 and get AVI's that Pinnacle Studio will open and edit, but again, I can't schedule recordings. (Doesn't freeze the computer, though.)

    * I can capture with PowerVCR II, which schedules recording beautifully in a number of flavours of MPEG, but Pinnacle won't open any of the files it captures. The error message Pinnacle gives is "The video file <filename> could not be opened. Studio does not support this progressive scan (non-interlaced) MPEG2 video file format.";

    * I can capture with the WinTV Scheduler that Hauppauge has for download at www.hauppauge.com, but it also makes MPG's that Studio won't open. And for those, it just says "could not be opened," with no explanatory second sentence.

    I need a solution which will let me capture on schedule with the Hauppauge WinTV PCI card, in a format that Pinnacle Studio 9.3.5 will be happy to edit. Surely someone out there has done this.

    I'd prefer not to have to buy any more software, in the hope that what I've got already will do the job with the right tweaks. Freeware's fine, shareware preferably if it's dirt cheap.

    I also have a need to convert WMV captures (from web streams) into something that Pinnacle Studio 9.3.5 can edit; I've seen a few different shareware things, but they don't work, and I don't know if it's because of the particular WMV's or the software itself. What's a good cheap (or free?) solution there?

    Thanks!

  2. I do not have Studio9. But I have used WinTV/Schedule to capture
    using PicVideo and 640x480. Then, I used Studio 8 to edit and burn
    the captured file.

    WinTV Scheduler captures using WinTV2000 so you should get the identical file format as capturing with WinTV2000.
    At least I think.

    That's one weird thing. WinTV2000 in itself makes .AVI files, but Scheduler makes .MPG files. I haven't found any 'Options' link in Scheduler that gives you a way to change that.[/quote]

  6. PicVideo is a very good video codec. The trail version will put a watermark
    on the bottom of the screen. You can also get rid of the watermark by
    paying them ~$30 for a paid version. You can find it from TOOL section
    of this web site. You can also read others comments about it.

    After you installed PicVideo, you open WinTV2000 and select PicVideo
    as video compression method there. Also configure the PicVideo using
    quality arround 19. Then, you are done. Try the trail version first to see
    if it works for you or not.

    Good luck.
