Just make sure you have a decent firewall, or a software firewall ...and good anti-virus protection. Having a broadband connection means hackers and trolls can poke away at your ports all day if they want. At least with dialup you usually have a dynamic IP address. Not so with broadband.

    Hello,

    Yeah thanks...

I asked a friend about it and he suggested a wireless router with firewall protection when I set up my wireless network

I'll be doing software firewall at first. It comes with it.

Will that be enough for starters?????

Or should I invest in something like Norton firewall?? Do they have one???

    Thanks..

I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall right now. We've had it for years and it works very well. But I'll bet there are a number that do a good job, including Norton's.

  4. My ISP has their own FW, so Im protected there first.

dslreports.com has tests you can run to see if your FW is working.

    Hello,

Thanks for all the help guys

coastercreator - Do you REALLY think I would tell you where I live????

I think I'll stick with their (sbc) built in firewall for now. When I do go wireless I'll be sure to check if it's got it's own firewall

We have a mixed wireless/wired LAN too. He just means that where the broadband enters the house, a wireless router is used to interface to machines in the house that have a wireless card. No ethernet cabling needed that way

    Hello,

    Ok... suggestions requested:

This is one desktop wireless G transmitter I've looked at: (bestbuy)

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1074787358650&skuId=6304714&productCategory...0&type=product

Now for a wireless G notebook receiver card:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051384663962&skuId=5250792&productCategory...1&type=product

So would these two be acceptable???????? Is that all I need for desktop to notebook wireless connection?????

And for the xbox I would just need a wireless adapter right????

    Thanks guys...

    Kevin

EDIT - I just checked out cnet.com and looked at the zonealarm pro... Is this any good???? Would that be good to get in addition to whatever preinstalled firewall comes with my modem????

From the looks of things Yoda, it looks like your going to be spending some serious cash.... DSL, Router, G card....

Oh yeah.... you work at a bank.....

Actually your IP is dynamic with either set up, only with broadband, your IP addy only changes when you shutdown your pc or disconn from the network....
Also Roadrunner here automaitcally refreshes my addy without my knowledge.
That is why they make you pay more $$ for a truly static address...

    Hello,

MY MODEM CAME! MY MODEM CAME!

    Yep it came today...

I've got it hooked up and ready to go. The little lights flicker and everything like their supposed to.

Now all I have to do is wait for ACTIVATION

It's scheduled for Monday 11/22. Hopefully they might have it ready sooner

    Yoda,

If I were you, I would wait to hook it up.

    You could fry the modem.

That is what a technical support rep told me.

Whereas I hooked up mine and . . . nothing ! Hmmmmm disconnected, uninstalled reconnected - nothing ! Eventually phoned "support" only to be told the network was down. Bastards.

Sorry, but if it was coming on today, it would have happened just after midnight. I'm sure one more day won't kill you. Of course, bein a holiday week, it might not happen until next Monday now.....
