  1. My goal is to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD...with chapters to make it easier to navigate.
The problem. I have a stand alone dvd vhs/dvd burner that will create a DVD with one touch and put it in either dvd-video format or the DVD-VR format. Neither of which has thumbnailed chapters. So I am trying to edit the DVD that I make on the stand alone but have failed miserably.
I am using Nero nerovision, which is very easy to use, but I haven't been able to successfully create an edited disc without nero just freezing up of saying it's unable to read the disc.
I am using Windows XP and have a Dell dimensions 8200 computer.
I've tried making a DVD-video formatted disc, finalizing it, and then trying to make a DVD from this with chapters. No dice.
I've recorded in the DVD-VR format, finalized the disc, and then tried to use nerovision to create a new DVD with chapters. No dice. I think the VRO files are not readily identified by nero.
Any solutions or software that will allow me to take my DVD that I make on my standalone unit and add chapters with loss of quality.
    Thanks

I would try different author app. TMPGEnc DVD author (30-day free trial, very easy to use) or one of ulead products, e.g. moviefactory. They should directly import your video's VIDEO_TS or RTAV files, and allow easy addition if chapters to dvd-video or dvd-vr files. Be aware that a quirk of win xp is inability to natively read dvd-vr files. Usually the software will install this support. If not you can try to first extract the files from the dvd-rw or dvd-ram to your harddrive with isobuster. If this doesn't work there may be issues with your dvd recorder.
    1. Do the discs play back on your recorder?
    2. What is Brand and model of recorder?
    3. What brand, type (-r, +r, -rw, +rw, ram) and model media

answers to these questions will help the "gurus" solve your problem if my simple solution won't. Best of luck.

  3. I was thinking of trying the TMGenc authoring program.
I can play the DVD-VRs on my computer DVD burner, which is a Plextor 715A if I click on the VOR files and play them.
I was trying Fuji DVD-R and -RWs.
    Any other suggestions?

  4. So- to be clear. The authoring software you are speaking about will take my DVD-vr format and create a DVD-video format disc?

Sorry about the delay in reply, but yes "VR-friendly" author programs, like those above will convert the vr files to VIDEO_TS files wich can be burned and played back on many standalone players. You can also add chapters and menus, if desired

If you want to experiement, you could try and de-mux (demuliplex) your
    audio/video into separate *.mp2 and *.m2v files.
    .
Then, you can use ifoEdit with these two files and create VOB files.
During the creation stage, you can use a text file that hold the frames no's
as Chapters (or entry points) into your VOB file. I had a problem with this
file for a few weeks, but finally figure it out today with success.

The filename is celltimes.txt and looks very simple:

    Code:
     300
     600
     700
The above are frame numbers of a given position with the MPEG that
you de-muxed in the above step (using almost any number of MPEG demuxer's)
    .
    So, for example.. the 300 mean ( 30fps * 1 minute ) = 300 frames, and so on.

Inside ifoEdit, you'll see a small box asking for the celltimes.txt file. Make
sure that it spells just that. ifoEdit *only* require this name only, in order to work.

Once it creates the VOB file, you can play it, using the [Back] - [Next] buttons
at will. It works in my Apex AD-1500 player

Well, that above is just for experiments, if you can use your VR files. I think
that TMPG (MPEG Tools) will read this files and de-muliplex them. But I'm
    not sure.

I don't know how to make menus in ifoEdit though. I'm not their yet.
