    Hi all,
    Thanks for reading this post..
As the subject says, my DVP 642 freezes at various spots on my DVDs..Most of my dvds are home movies I made from VHS tapes..The 642 will freeze usually at the same spot in the video each time..Some times it will move on and sometimes not..I can take the very same DVD and play it in my Sylvania 20 inch TV with built in DVD player, and the Disk plays fine..No freezes at all.. BTW this happened on many disks not just one..I think there may be something wrong in the way i burned it but i have no clue as to whats wrong..I used several authoring programs(TMPGEnc 1.6 and WinDVD creator) and both will freeze on the 642 but not the Sylvania..I tried different settings in the menu and also have the latest firmware installed..
Can anyone point me to how to correct this problem?
Thanks for any suggestions and or tips...

When you first put the disc in the dvp-642 does it load quickly or does it take a long time for the disc to be recognized?

  3. TMPGEnc has worked great for me, no complaints yet. What brand of media do you use?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply..
I first put my video on DVD-RW disks first then copy then to DVD+R disks after they work correctly..I use both Imation and Memorex and erase them to use again later on another project..
The loading time seems normal, and the video starts normally, but sometimes 1 to two minutes later it will freeze and sometimes just as a test i let it go and it will randomly freeze throughout the video to the end..It seems to be scene dependent and not media dependent...
Thats why I felt that i did not have a handle on whats going on...
The weird thing is that I can take that very same disk and put it into another player (the sylvania) mentioned in the first post and it plays fine ..No Freezes...
Another weird thind is that I can take the very same disk and put it into a third player(a recent JVC) and it freezes like the Phillips does..It is my guess that they,( the Philips&JVC) uses the same chipset in their design.
Out of the three players I have in the house two freezes one plays fine..
    Big mystery ..
I was wondering if anyone else had this problen...
I agree that TMPGE is an excellent program...Again thanks gfor your reply.

Sounds like a media issue. I have the dvp-642 and some of my cheaper DVD+RW stick sometimes (not my Memorex +RW though) if I fast forward or pause a while even with the bitsetting to dvd-rom. It's like it has a hard time reading after that. I noticed that if a disc takes a long time to load at the start, I'm more likely to see that problem but it also happens with my 2 Apex players. None of my +R or -R discs have any issues like that. I don't have any DVD-RW so can't comment on those.
On a similar note, I recall that someone suggested in another thread to keep problem discs under 4 gig and that apparently helps to solve many issues with freezing discs.

    Hi again gll99,
Looks as though there is no silver bullet on this problem..I will check the file size on the freezing video but I think all are 4 gigs or less but I will do a test and copy the freezing RW disks to a + or - disk and see if the media is an issue or not..
    Keep warm up there..
    Goodluck,

It's unclear from the posts what brand of DVD+R media you are using as it seems that Imation and Memorex are your brand of DVD+RW discs. Some players have problems with specific brands of discs. Personally, I think Memorex discs are garbage. I bought a 25 pack once and I had 3 or 4 in the pack that refused to burn. Imation is known for their cheap media. I don't think the 4 Gig size thing is going to help. Try a better brand of media. I think Verbatim makes very good media.

  8. What DVD writer are you using? Pioneer and NEC are the gold standards, as far as console compatibility is concerned.

    Hi,
I use the Imation and Memorex DVD+RW disks and The Verbatin DVD-R, and Memorex DVD+R disks..Like I said I used the RW disks to see if all is Okay, then copy to either the - or + disk depending on who in the family gets the video..
My dvd writer is the Plextor PX-708A drive..
As far as software,I use TMPGEnc 1.6 0r Windvd creator or Pinnacle 9..
At this point I have not done any tests tp prove it is software, media or any hardware..Thanks all for your tips and posts..It is appreciated..
