Is there a way to transfer files between two computers using Firewire WITHOUT having to set up a network?

Are there any softwares that allow this?

Both computers are running Win XP Pro.

    Hi waheed,

What type of files? Just any files in general?

Maybe, if you could configure it and your PCs, any FTP software might work...? There's loads out there...

I'm just curious why you wouldn't want to set it up as 1394 networking as that is the simplest method. Is there a conflict with other network devices?

No, im just curious to know if it were possible to transfer files without setting up a network. It is possible for USB, just wanted to know for Firewire.

    Thanks for the replies.

I already have a network set up (using a router to connect to internet), just didn't want to alter existing settings.

You should be able to piggyback the 1394 onto your existing network. I used FireWire to transfer files between my two workstations since it was faster than the ethernet cabling, you just bridge the two networks. Nice thing is you don't even have to mess with a crossover.

If you already have both computers networked via a router(w/ inbuilt switch I'm assuming?), then you just need to enable sharing the drive with the source files (right-click on the drive in My Computer or Windows Explorer, and go to sharing and security). You should then be able to access it from the destination computer just by going to Start Menu > Run and typing \\sourcecomputername\sharename.

If I have assumed wrong, then
    If in doubt, Google it.
