Hi. I'm new at this and I have visited several forums trying to figure it out myself but no succes. The problem is that I can't play avi files. The general solution I thought, was to update the codecs.. But now I think I have a conflict of codecs. Here's the thing: when I want to play an avi, my player shuts down. I recently updated to WMP10 (WMP9 was working fine) and I followed the advise to install BSplayer. Same there: it simply shuts down immediately. (Mpeg files run without problems with image and sound.)
I have checked with GSpot (v2.2) if I had all necessary codecs installed which I had:
video format -> 5 compatible codecs installed
audio format -> 2 compatible codecs installed
Okay, this worries me a little bit, but on the other hand I don't know what's normal.
I have run a demo/test Xvid-minifile which was running fine. That should have concluded that the avi files were corrupted but I had an AVI on CD which could definitely not be corrupted, therefore I think it is a codec problem. Uninstall and reinstall updated codecs (including ffdshow +..) and the update to WMP10 was no succes.
I don't know what to do anymore.. Could someone plz help me out?

try it with this, where most other apps fail to play video files this usually comes up trumps.

I would recommend Videolan also. Your codecs are probably interfering with each other. You can remove the excess codecs with DXman or Codec Sniper.
It's best to stay away from codec packs, if that's what you used. Just run the video through AVIcodec or Gspot and install them only as needed. -
YES! Thanks. VLC works just fine!!!!
The cleanup... I downloaded DXman and it gives a long list, but I don't want to screw up and I don't know what to remove.

Ok, the original problem is solved; I can play avi and mpeg again. But only with VLC media player.
Thanks for that one!!
As for the rest: no succes. BSplayer still shuts down and WMP10 now gives me an error -instead of shutting down immediately- that it can't play the file (avi or mpeg). I guess to really fix it all is to reinstall Windows....

I have the same problem. Windows Media Player 10 will not play audio of avis (divx, xvid) and any forwarding will make it crash. Is this a Media Player issue or is it an XP issue? I am having the same problem with subtitle workshop and winsubtitler. And I have no problems in my other PC Win2000 Pro and WMP9. I did several searches but could not find a soulution.
