I use TMPGEnc 2.58.44.152 Plus to convert avi to mpg, but the results are a darker picture than the original avi. Why is this can someone explain?

You have just entered the twilight zone of the "dreaded" TMPGEnc option called ---> Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601

    As Marlon Brando said:

Don't even attempt to figure out what it means.

All I can suggest is this ... the default for this option is NOT CHECKMARKED so you might want to re-encode but this time put a CHECKMARK on it.

You will find it on the MPEG SETTING dialog box on the TAB called QUANTIZE MATRIX

I found this old post that you might be interested in reading as it is all about that "dreaded" option in TMPGEnc

  4. This weekend, I gave the "Output YUV data as Basic YCbCr not CCIR601" option a try, prompted by reading this thread. I'm converting DV-AVI from home digital-8 video to Mpeg-2 for DVD.

To my eye, the results are much better with the option enabled. Not only are the colors richer, but the image appears to be sharper. I would definitely encourage experimentation with this option. I did notice that the shadows and some colors appear darker while viewing the resulting mpegs on the computer. But when burned to disk and viewed on a the TV, the darkness seemed less of an issue to me.
