Just bought a 50 pack of TY02 from rima.com and it came in a clear spindle with nothing identifying it as TY. It's as plain as you can get - no wrapper or anything. I put the dvd in dvdinfopro and it states that it is in fact a TY02 media. Is this the way TY media usually comes? I was a little surprised, it looks so generic.
By the way, after my one bad episode with Ritek DVD-R's discs (several months ago), I figured I'd give them another try. The outter label states that they are made in Taiwan. I thought these guys were made in Japan.
By the way, both media that I bought from rima.com are 8x printable DVD-R's.

Other than the integrity of Rima there is nothing distinctive about TY other than an often copied media ID code (see Matrix and Supermedia house brand). If you look at the case they came in, it should be different and match the picture on the Rima site. Usually TY has had the unique closing system on the bottom, even when they were sold under another brand.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
Couple of things - first, they look identical to the picture you have included in your post. Second, what are you implying about the integrity of rima? I thought folks here, for the most part, had very good success dealing with rima.com. That's why I gave them a shot. The only other time I've bought from them is when I got a bad batch of riteks. The way they handled the situation (full refund even though both 50 pack spindles were opened and several discs had been used) was commendable. Therefore I'm very curious about what you were implying. I want to make sure I'm buying discs in the future from a very reputable retailer!

Why post if you have nothing to contribute? I've read a couple of your posts lately and you do this from time to time. I don't get it - either contribute or don't write. Maybe something here is obvious to you, and if so, please point it out (because it isnt' to me which is why I raised the question!) Thanks -

Ritek is made in Taiwan. Only TYs come in that package. that is all.

Thank you Flaystus, I appreciate you clearing that up for me. I know that question must have appeared to be boneheaded, but I've been out of the loop for about a year now with these kinds of topics, since everything has been working great for me with my media and burning dvds. However just recently I've encountered some new problems which is why I decided to change the media I use and why I visited the forum to get some help. Thanks again!

Capmaster,
I don't want to get into a juvenile argument with you or the other poster, but how are question marks supposed to help me? OBVIOUSLY I did not know that Riteks are made in Taiwan. For the same time that it took him to write up a post that didn't include any useful information, he could have done what Flaystus did, just inform me. Good grief, relax, everything is ok as I now know the info I was seeking. No need to comment back to me on this, I'm good - thanks! -

Although I believe my point is very valid, I also believe your comments are as well. That's fine, the last thing I want is to get into some flame war (I've got far better things to do with my time). I just don't see the point when posters (on this forum or any other forum) leave comments which don't include any information which is helpful whatsoever. Nonetheless, that's fine, we'll end this right here.

nickelzy, to be honest with you, I misread your post and thought that you said that you had bought a spindle of Taiyo Yuden from RIMA and that they said made in Taiwan on them.
In that context, my super-short post would have worked very well. The two smileys I used called "shocked" and "question" perfectly conveyed the shock, confusion, and need for more information in light of an issue as potentially HUGE as Taiyo Yuden being made in Taiwan. If somebody did get a spindle of Taiyo Yuden media with the words "made in Taiwan" on it, the shockwaves would ripple throughout the media forum and words would not be needed to express the emotions that DVDR obsessed folks like myself would feel, only smileys.
Unfortunatly, I was in a hurry to go to work and did not realize you were referring to Ritek, a media that is well known to be made in Taiwan. If you read your post over, I think you will see that it was very easy to assume that you meant Taiyo Yuden said "made in Taiwan".
That said, my post could also work though admittedly not as well, as a response for you thinking that Ritek were ever made in Japan.
Anyway, I don't really understand why your response was so harsh or why you had to make it personal by saying that I "do this from time to time". I write some of the most tedious and time consuming posts on this forum. It took me a long time to write this one! Check out my own thread about Taiyo Yuden CD-R media from RIMA if you are not convinced.
P.S. Thanks Cap! -
just my lil ole 2 cents on TAIYO YUDEN from RIMA.COM, if you look closely at hub there is a serial number imprinted on there. i spoke to the manager at RIMA a few months ago when there was some speculation that RIMA had fake TY discs. he told me to look at the hub for the serial number because that would prove they aren't fake. he also mentioned they read forum sites and was aware of the Fake TY speculation.
btw 888888 dont feel bad about thinking he was talking about RITEK being made in taiwan. i too thought he was referring to the TY discs. -
EDIT: I was mistaken- the TY box is only similar to the Princo one. oops! sorry, easy to tell the difference.

I've gone to straight Taiyo Yuden DVD-R from Rima. I went around on the merry go round trying to find good, cheap media from various places .....Princo, Optodisc, Ridata, etc.
I had the added complication of trying to find media for the Panny E50 standalone, with its own preferences, and my previous (before the Pio 107) PC writer - a Panny LF-D311 which was most definitely picky on what you fed it.
TY media was the only one that both machines never generated a coaster with. Maxell (Ritek G04) choked the standalone. Optodisc choked the LF-D311. Princo choked both. And I didn't want to keep an inventory of different media for each machine.
But it's alarming how many online vendors just flat out lie about who the manufacturer really is. When the info page on a media comes up, they always seem to list the fake, relabeled brand name they're selling it as, as the manufacturer.
A quick check with DVDInfo Pro proves that it's usually something like Princo or CMC ...garbage media. Go to Shop4Tech and look at their "Leda" media. They say the manufacturer is "Leda", but it's really Princo. Marginal media at best.
So to avoid the risk of buying a 100-spindle of junk (I've done that too many times), I'm sticking with the "good stuff". Especially now that there is no longer a $1 or $1.20/disc difference between the junk and the primo media ...it's more like 20 cents a disk. Not worth the hassle or the coasters to try to shave a few bucks off that spindle price

If Prodisc ever gets back to shipping S03 media I have found that it works very well in my E-50. I still have a couple of hundred and I keep them just this. For all else I agree; I only buy TY.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
The last 500 I got from Rima were S03, I made them guarantee it before ordering.

I have to add my concern about the Riteks. Am getting more and more of them crapping up towards the end. Wasn't like that before. One thing I did notice from the 25 pack G04's to the latter 50 pack G05's, is the quality of the printed slip inside the tub. The G04's had a proffesionally printed, sharp looking, blue banding/yellow writing etc slip, but the G05's look like its like its been casually done, and printed on a photocopier with blue printing, and no "made in Taiwan". Very Tacky, very suspicious and unproffesional looking. If Ritek switched from the G04's to the G05's would they downgrade so drastically the quality of the printed slip ? Does this mean anything ? Has anyone else noticed this ? I wish I could add the image to this message. Maybe you guys could show the labels so we could compare notes ?

The message across the board is that Ritek quality is sliding, and some Ritek branded stuff is giving 80% etc failure rates. This applies to other "crap" brands also. Something I cannot begin to comprehend, ....is, are the manufacturers totally ignorent & stupid ? Do they not test these things ? Do they not have any quality control ? How can you manufacture something that has such a failure rate, be such crap, and carry on churning it out ? As Spock would say...."That is not logical"
