Is there a software package or utility that will take a video file and modify it so that the new file actually plays in reverse?

Videomach from http://www.gromada.com/VideoMach.html (30 day free trial) which will allow you to reverse (run backwards) any footage (There is an option in "Define Output" to "Save Backwards")

I have never used this, but it might be a starting point.

Interesting topic. I recently wanted to do just that - for a limited size clip - and in absense of anything better to do I use VirtualDUB to save the clip as a series of images (img000001, img000002, ...). I then used an image viewer (Thumbsplus) to sort them in reverse name order and then used the auto-rename facility to rename then again in ascending numering. This virtually generated an image series of the video in reverse order which I then re-imported to Virtualdub to render as AVI.

I would be interested to see if anything better exists.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Media Studio Pro (probably Premier & Vegas too). Insert clip into timeline, right click, select reverse

  5. If you want to do it for free then you can use AviSynth and its Reverse filter.

All - Premiere 6.0 (and so, guess, similar versions):

    1. Insert clip on timeline.
    2. Right click -> Speed
    3. Set to -100% (minus or negative 100%) for same speed, just reverse. Of course, different %ges, different speed. Positive = normal / forward, negative = reverse.

    Works a treat...

    Anything else - no idea.

To all -- thanks for the input!! I do have AVISYNTH, but I didn't know a reverse filter was available. I'll give that a shot.

You can do some pretty amazing things with AviSynth.

As soon as I read the very first post in this thread I immediately thought, "I have no idea how to do this but I bet AviSynth can do it" hehehe

I wonder though how well this would work with interlaced 29.970fps NTSC video?

Wouldn't that cause all sorts of "issues"?

You can do this in Vegas in about 2 clicks, and you can specify how fast in reverse you want it.

  10. Odd, but there are usually more topics about how to get a reverse playing video to play forward

AfterEffects. That's where you can do the fun stuff--start, stop, speed up, slow down, reverse, all within the same clip in the same timeline. Hell, you could probably do a "DJ scratch" of a clip! 8) (also $$)

But for free, you can't beat AVISynth.
