That's because if they don't they'll feel embarased when their 12 year old son's friend comes over and says "Gee what dorks, they only have a 286!"

    It could be worse.

They could be playing on a Trash80.

  6. I spent a fair bit on my PC and overclocked it to the limit, but I actually use all the power it offers. I do video encoding (obviously) and a fair bit of gaming. It is a bit of a waste sitting and typing on such a powerful machine, though! Sadly, that's something I have to do a lot...

My father bought a new computer for his girlfriend to use... Upgraded from a 233 pentium to a 2.4ghz. She plays bingo online. So, you can see the dire need for a new PC.

I have a friend that just bought a $500 all-in-one package/computer from walmart that works great for him considering that he does not do shit on it. But he was telling me that he wants a custom computer built for him. I asked why, and his reply was "I want to get into burning music cd's."

Anyone remember those ghey cocos (Tandy Color Computer)? The monitor had a fake floppy drive next to the CRT. Presumably you could impress your friends and fool them into thinking you really had a floppy drive on your computer. Wow.

Yeah. I never used one with a screen that small. I'd need one of those ultra-geeky head-mounted magnifying glasses like Dr. Emmett Brown's in order to see the flippin screen

Trying to remember what color it was, I'm thinking blue but I'm not certain. Might have been plasma orange.

Hey Viral - you remember what a big deal CGA was on the IBM PC? Imagine ....sixteen colors on a 9" screen. That was livin' large.

Back to the topic - I see that all the time...people want 3 GHz PCs to play solitaire on

Then there's my friend Ward at work. He only uses his home PC for old games and spreadsheets. He uses an IBM XT ...still 4.77 MEGAHERTZ of manly, testosterone-inspired, raw computing power, 10 MEGABYTE hard disk, and a full 640K RAM. Of course his executables are only 15K

I had an XT too. I only had 256K, but it got me through a good part of high school. No hard drive, just 2 big ol' 360K floppy drives and WordStar.
(and yes, complete with CGA graphics)

I left my old IBM Win98 PC here for this: To play Solitaire.

The old PC is now only recently retired due to age and now no longer connected to the LAN and Internet.

It is in use for only on small things and this is it.

It works well playing Solitaire and no need to buy an expensive New PC.

My father plays it and this is why I still got the old thing.

Another thing, there is a place in Sydney having an old Win98 PC at only 200 MHz CPU. Very old indeed, must be over 7 years ago.

It was slow all because of infected spyware in the machine having search popups every now and then.

Well, not my problem and they have to remove the spyware on it.

I laugh at the people that purchase their PC from a porprietary dealer, or at a chain store. More often than not, I'll take the quote they got into my local computer shop and it'll be anywhere between $100-$500 cheaper.
    If in doubt, Google it.
