how to add sub title to a avi file

Hi ppl

recently i download a movie avi file. there is no subtitle during the playback. however i notice the following:

there is this XXX.sub & XXX.idx


May i know whether this XXX.sub (around 3 mb) is actually the subttle file ??? if so how do i add it into the avi file ???


also what is the xxx.idx file abt ?

Those are subtitle files produced by VobSub. For details:

just install vobsub and you will see the subs in all software avi players. be sure to the name the subtitle the same as the video, like video.avi and video.sub and video.idx.

hmm but all tat is just to show subtitile when playing the avi file...BUT wat mus i do to add the subtitle into the AVI...cos i intend to convert the AVI into a DVD output with subtitile

you can convert to dvd and have switchable subtitles using dvd2svcd(avi2svcd), thefilmmachine or diko
or add permanent subtitles with virtualdub or vobsub and tmpgenc
