  1. Hi there

I have a geforce 5600 fx graphics card that has tv-out. I use tv-out quite a bit to watch movies on my TV. The problem is that I now have a widescreen plasma tv, and when I use tv-out, the image that is transfered to the screen is square, because it is the image that is transferred from the monitor. So "what-you-see" on the monitor is what you get on the TV.

    see picture:

Now I want to somehow transfer the movie to the TV but transfer just the movie itself, no other black stuff. I dont want to transmit the 4:3 monitor image, I want to transfer the 2.35:1 widescreen image. Are there any apps that can help with this?? Any help appreciated!

You might want to try ZOOMPLAYER

I think that will do what you want.

  3. Thanks I downloaded it, however I cant get it to display the video? Not sure what the story is there, but I play any video and the screen/output is black no matter what I play. Read the help file and FAQ without any luck.. Have you heard of this problem?

Well don't give up ... ZOOMPLAYER does everything you want.

You can adjust the ratio from 4:3 to 16x9 as well as account for overscan by making the image smaller or bigger etc.

I don't know how you got it set up so that it isn't working correctly ... just keep playing with it.

As for myself I long ago stopped using my computer to play back to the TV so I havne't used ZOOMPLAYER in a long time ... in short I'm no expert using it and can't offer any trouble shooting on it.

Err Ahgh. I don't really know shit about gforce. But does it just clone your PC monitor or can you do the extended desktop thing. And can't you adjust the output in the displays advanced properties box?

  6. The geforce does a clone of the current screen. I can adjust the settings in there, under 'Fullscreen video' which appears to allow me to zoom and adjust the positioning of the video outputted to the TV however I can't get it to make any change to the TV image - at least not yet. I am following the instructions and "zooming", however no change on the TV. I will keep playing with it, however it is a pain because I cant see the TV from where this computer is

thanks for your help so far..!!

I have an ATIAIW 7500 that allows the screen the be changed to what is called an extended desktop. You can open differnt apps and drag some of the components from one screen (your monitor to the other part of the desktop your TV) I have in the past had either an editing program or a player that would let you just drag the edges or corner of the little veiw screen to resize it and move it. I am sorry that I can't remember what program it was. I have downloaded a few that have expired and had a few that have come with differnt hardware. Right now the only one that is doing what I am thinking is my webcam and it looks like hell. I don't know how it works but sometimes the other screen doesn't work unless I change the video device settings WDM to VFW or Rage theater or others depending what is running and what will work.
You know that for $30. you can buy a stand alone DVD player an save on the asprin!

  8. I have previously run dual video cards in this machine, and with these two cards I have made an extended desktop with two monitors sitting on my desk. I think the radeon has this facility (one card) and the Nvidia might, I will have to look, but Im not sure how this will help me get widescreen unless I can zoom / resize somehow..

True true, but I already have a DVD player. The movies I am playing are ones I have gotten off some friends, a lot of them are old movies and animated series which are not on VHS let alone DVD Recently I have been getting some widescreen ones and thus want to take advantage of my plasma!

Whilst not being able to resize the image coming out of my Nvidia card is annoying, I cannot currently get ANY image out of a Radeon 9200 Still working on that.. I think (aka hope!) its the connectors or something simple..

Loardsmurf is my hero when it comes to the ATI stuff. I know that you want to be able to output from your PC to widescreen with a simple program but if you cant play the vid the way that you want with any of your apps burning a DVD of it might end up being the easiest path. I have heard that the killer cards all want to be the primary card or something like that and can give you greif if you try to run two cards at the same time. Do any of your editing programs or players allow you to resize the preveiw window? In what form are the vids when you get them? I am thinking about doing my vids in damb PowerPoint! JK (maybe)

  10. I think most of them are in Divx or Xvid format. Before I transferrd them directly to my TV via tv-out, I went through the process of converting the video to DVD format and burning the video on to DVD discs. I did about 5 clips this way but got real tired of the 5+ hour conversions, even though I did do it overnight. This way I save time and money, and just get headaches instead

With this Radeon, the system seems to think that there are two cards installed . Both Radeon 9200s and they are identical except that one is named "- secondary". I am using a converter that was supplied with my Nvidia card, that takes an input of S-Video and outputs a video line (yellow). This is what I use on my tv-out on my nvidia system and so i assume it should work on the Radeon too... however I cant tell if the radeon isnt outputting any signal or whether something else is amiss..

  11. I have got the nvidia to zoom in now, but the image size on the tv stays the same (with the black bars on each side), and the actual video is zoomed in. eg part of the picture on the screen is zoomed in further, but the physical size of the image on the TV stays the same. Am doing more googling and looking into this "Tv-tools" thing too..

The fact that you have what looks like a widescreen image with a lot of black all around it. Most widescreens have an image size of 1280 x 768 so it might be that you have a smaller image being sent from your video card. Most will resize to full screen though.

Haven't you got image size controls on the TV? My widescreen Sony allows me to view in 4:3 (with black bars on both sides), 14:9, 16:9, zoom and smart. The smart setting automatically resizes the image to give full screen no matter what the source aspect ratio is (so anything in 4:3 has the top and bottom of the image cut off). The zoom allows me to zoom in on any portion of the image and display that full screen.

  13. Richard, thanks for the reply. I've only owned the plasma for a short time and hadn't accessed the controls for changing the onscreen aspect ratios until now..

the input to the screen is 4:3 but yes, I am able to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 and 'zoom' to make the image widescreen. it is now much better, however, still not 100% because I still have lines top and bottom when displayed on the plasma.

I just realised something... the plasma is 16:9 but the images I am displaying on it (from the PC) are 2.35:1, ie 16:6.8. Bummer. This is why I have so much black image above and below the video. In "zoom" mode I have 30% of the height as black, and in 16:9 mode I have 47% of the height of the screen as black. Unfortunately I don't think I have a 'stretch' mode on my plasma (panasonic)

At least the whole thing is now sorted. All this messing around with programs and stuff when I could have just pressed a button on my remote control - d'oh!!

    Thanks everyone for your help

That's like my luck! I had an old hand me down VCR for years before I found out that there was a panel on the front that opened up to expose all sorts of goodies like speed and tracking adjustments and input/output jacks and how to instructions about the remote. Remote? hell I didn't even know that it had a remote, so I bought an all in one remote for it years ago but now it works off of the sat remote. It just goes to show that all them little knobs and buttons are meant to be played with!
