  1. I've tried Stomp, Nero, Prassi, Veritas, and Gear. Nothing I've tried will create a DVD that will play on this recorder. Not a single one. Yet, I've bought or rented over a 1000 commercial titles and they ALL play perfectly.

Maybe I should just dump this old machine, but it's a REFERENCE STANDARD player and has tremendous audio and video. Perhaps it's the DVD medium I'm using.

Does anybody have a formula that works on this machine? I'm sick and tired of making coasters.

    Thanks,

what other software are you using? are you burning in the dvd-video mode with nero? are the settings in nero correct? what dvd media are you using dvd+r or dvd-r? if i'm not mistaken older dvd players can not playback dvd+r unless you use a dvd burner that uses bitsetting then it would be able to playback.

here's what it says about your dvd player:

The Sony DVP-S7000 is indeed a fantastic player, but it's old.

The idea of burning your own DVD's wasn't even somebody's wet dream when this player was made.

To put it bluntly, this player just doesn't play DVD-R's. Out of literally dozens of discs I've tested on it, only about two play. And those two have nothing in common. I've attributed it to just a fluke.

It does seem to play DVD-RW's, at least a greater percentage than DVD-R's.

And the one DVD+R disc I've tried in it (on loan from a friend) seems to play fine. My burner only does -R's, so I can't really do any extensive tests.

If your burner does +R and -R, I'd suggest trying a few DVD+R discs in it. I'd be interested in the results.

  4. First, a dumb question. I thought that commercial DVD's were -R. If not -R, what are they?

DVD+R doesn't work either. I'm trying a DVD-RW but I'm having troubles getting it to format. I think some vestige of an old packet writer is screwing up the format capability. Or perhaps the DRU-500A drive is faulty. Guess I need to try it on another machine and see what happens.

    Onward through the fog...

They are NOT a recordable medium. They are pressed in a factory.

That should give you some more info.

Sorry about your problems with dvds. Can you upgrade the firmware on the standalone dvd player???? Check sony's website for info.

Also, how old is it??? If it's one of the very first models it may have trouble recognizing the new formats....

The DVP-S7000 is the very first DVD player Sony ever made, circa 1997-8. I tried several authoring/burniong programs over several months trying to get -R's to play on it, but came to the conclusion that this model's just too old.
