I am very new to this game and am trying to copy a region 2 dvd to region free format. I have region free software for the reading dvd drive (seperate burning drive), dvdshrink as the ripping software and Nero 6 ultra as the burning prog. I can read (or play - I can view the dvd on my PC) the dvd, and burn a copy, but it is not region free (according to my Sony dvd player). The region free box is checked on Nero when I set up the burn, but the dvd is not recording the dvd as region free. I can play the burned copy of the dvd on my PC but not on my TV dvd player (Sony see above). I feel I am almost there! What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

PS I am using a NEC 1100 + dvd burner

Hello,
Are you in a region 1 area (US, Mexico, etc..)???
If so than simply making a region 2 disc region free will not let it run on a us ntsc dvd player (it will play in the pc without a hitch).
You need to convert the pal disc to ntsc to view on a ntsc dvd player.
Look through the guides for pal to ntsc and you'll find some help. Not an easy project mind you
Of course you could always play the disc in your pc and watch it on your tv if you have a tv out card

Are you playing region 2 pal or region 2 ntsc?

I am playing region 2 pal (UK dvd) and trying to burn to region 1 ntsc player as region free (basically a UK dvd that I want to play on a US player). I own the disc.

Is dvd decrypter setup to rip as region free?
Also while your at it,why not try and make ur dvd player region free using a hack with the remote control?

I don't know about that bloke above me, but ....
As a couple of other allude to, it is quite possible that your DVD player only plays NTSC. If this is the case then you need to do a PAL-to-NTSC conversion. Another issue could be that your DVD Player can only play discs (PAL or NTSC) that are region 1 ie. some players can't play region-free discs. If you have the region-free tick box ticked in DVDShrink, then you are creating a region-free (or region 0) DVD.
So, worst case scenario is that you could have a player that will only play Region 1 NTSC, in which case you need to do a PAL-to-NTSC conversion, as well as tell DVDShrink to make it Region 1.If in doubt, Google it. -

I like the Sony but it is picky about only playing NTSC region 1 or NTSC region free disks.
Cheers
