  1. Well I've burned my first backup DVD using DVD Decrypter to rip to my hard drive, DVD Shrink to reauthor, and Roxio to burn. My writer is an NEC -ND3500A, my reader a Lite-On. The media used was a Prodisc 4X Silver DVD-R.

I only copied over the main movie file and English 5.1 from the Eurotrip disc. I burned at 4x and when everything was finished I popped it into my Denon DVD-2900 and fired up the rest of my home theater gear. My Rotel pre/pro instantly picked up the Dolby Digital soundtrack but the picture seemed to go up&down slightly when viewed on my 55" Mitsu widescreen TV.

Any thoughts as to what it could be?

    Thanks,
    Bill

If you just moved over the main movie and 5.1 track, IIRC that didn't require any transcoding.

In that case, I don't see why it would jump up and down, unless your player just doesn't like burnt media?

We've covered on numerous occasions the fact that Shrink doesn't DO anything to the data when the data fits, it just rearranges the files.

  5. Gurm,

I'm thinking that it's either the media or the speed at which I burnt the media (it's max, 4X in this case).

I'll rule out the speed tonight by using the exact same media and burning at 2X (unless I should try 1X).

If it's still shifting I'll try 2X on another brand of media and if the same problem possibly a third brand.

If all three brands exhibit the same behavior I assume it must be the software, hardware, or process by which I'm making the backup.

Probably a long shot but see if the original DVD has this same jumpiness. I've seen many DVDs (Signs, Gladiator) that have the prog_frame incorrectly set to interlaced. This causes slight jumpiness on some hardware setups.

  7. Adam,

That was the first thing that came to mind so I popped in the original and it does not exhibit the problem. Is there a progressive/interlaced setting I need to adjust in either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink?

WGB: Nope, that setting gets ripped along with the video... uhh... unless... well, this is a long shot.

Try leaving the menus in. Fire up Shrink, put everything but the main movie on "still image" and put the menus on "still pictures" or just the lowest compression.

It's POSSIBLE that by ripping just the movie you've lost that flag. Not likely, but possible.

There are several resons for a picture to jump.
    1. Dropped frames.
    2. Incorrect GOP order.
    3. Vertical sync issues.

Try this - Use DVD Decrypter to rip the files.
Now do the files play back on the PC OK?
Use DVD Shrink to reduce the file size. Save the DVD Shrink output to disk. Now do the files play back on the PC OK?
Burn a DVD. Does the DVDlay back OK? If not try a differe3nt burning SW. Try Record Now or TMPGenc DVD Author.

  10. It's really hard to tell on my 15'' PC monitor compared to my 55" HDTV.

I'm going to try a slower speed on the same media before anything else.

  11. Well...burned it again at 2X to the same Prodisc 4X media and the result was the same. I hadn't picked it up on my PC monitor initially but after closer examination it was there.

Before I try the same movie on a third disc (different brand) I may try a different movie...
