My player runs divx, but not xvid. I've not interest in converting the file to DVD and taking up an entire disk, so I wanted to keep it around the size it is now, but in divx. I checked the convert guide briefly but can't see a simple prog to run it. Thanks![]()

Hello,
You could try virtualdub. It is quite robust and should handle just about anything you throw at it. Or try virtualdubmod which will handle more types.

FourCC changer.
The two codecs (divx and xvid) are pretty much comptaible with each other. All you need to do in most cases is change the header info (the FourCC) to get it to play. -

I can watch DIVX files on my PS2, and even most XVID files. However, the player is EXTREMELY bad at processing B-Frames and some of the other advanced features of the latest XVID codecs. Seems like everything I download uses those features, too.
So what I do is load up the file in VirtualDub... then INEVITABLY some monkey encoded it with broken VBR audio, so I extract the audio to a WAV. Then I set audio to WAV source (point it at that WAV) and 128KB/sec. MP3 CBR. Then I set video to fast recompress (you're doing AVI->AVI with almost identical codecs, no need to full processing) and to DIVX multipass... and let it rip. Takes a little while, but I'm in no huge hurry.
More often than not, though, I just run DVDSanta or some similar program and dump the stuff I download (mostly TV episodes that I missed, or stuff that was running while the DVR was recording something else) onto DVD. DVD's have gotten cheap.
