  1. I have some panoramic AVIs that I recorded that are 1280x340, and I have used the VirtualDub resize filter to increase their resolution to 2560x640 (uncompressed video.) However, whenever I try to compress these extra-large files with either XviD, DivX, or the Microsoft MPEG-4 codec, I get an error about the video source being bad.

Is there some kind of limit to how large the video streams can be with these codecs? Are there any other good codecs/programs out there that will help me compress some of these very large files?

  2. Just curious. How did get that 1280X340 resolution? All the capture devices that I know max out at 720X576. What's the porpose of blowing it up to 2560x640? You gain nothing by doing that. Personally, I have never seen any AVI with a resolution higher than 720X576, so I think there might be a limit in VDub.

  3. I just made a 1280x340 AVI file with VirtualDubMpeg. I then opened it and resized to 2560x640 and saved with the Xvid codec (v.1.0.2). I got no complaints. Windows Media Player had no problem playing the final result.

  4. Ah, I upgraded my version of XviD and that solved the problem. I thought I had already upgraded it before, but I had not uninstalled the old version first so VirtualDub was still using the old one, doh! Anyway, thanks a bunch.

PS- I have a very specific application for these huge files. Also, these will be viewed with a head mounted display so the poor quality of the resized video will not matter much.
