i am thinking of buying myself a first dvd recorder, but i don't know if i should go with nec 3500 or Pioneer 108... which one and why?

Go here and search for standalone recorders. Read the user reviews:

The NEC 3500 and Pioneer 108 are dvd writers not recorders. DVD writers or burners are computer peripherals and need software to burn your DVDs.
