I know I want to buy intel P4 w/ hyperthreading, seems to be the consensus, but what of the 90000 motherboards to choose from? which is the best to get, and as far as the P4 chips, what of the different "cores" and "socket" numbers? or is anything acceptable as long as it's an intel P4 3+ ghz?

Stay away from Prescott P4s and get an Asus motherboard. You should do pretty well with that if you're going the Intel route.

To sdsumike619: If you live in the USA take a look at newegg.com for your motherboard and intel chip. I'll be getting another ASUS motherboard P4P800SE. Here's the link:

Here's a intel pent 4 3.0c northwood core cpu:

I'd vote for ASUS also, though I would put a AMD processor in it
I've used ABIT, Gigabyte, ECS, Shuttle, Tyan, Chaintech, Biostar, MSI, ASUS motherboards so far; mostly socket A. -
why do you say to stay away from the Prescott core? What the heck is a core anyhow? someone else suggested to me to get an Intel motherboard and have ASUS as a 2nd choice. Kind of makes sense if intel makes the chip and the motherboard , might work better together?

asus is a good motherboard to use. if you wanna use a intel board cuz both chip and motherboard are the same manufacturer that's fine. you've asked what is the best cpu/motherboard combo for editing and encoding. we've given you our opinions. -
ok still looking around, now what about the chipset, I'm seeing SiS, and Intel..
also, what about the socket? what is that? 478? LGA775? -
I use Epox boards with Nforce2 chipset very good boards, but I only build AMD's. See no reason why they should not be just as good for Pentiums though.

well i've read in so many places now that the hyperthreading makes a big difference in applications optimized for it, such as the major NLEs, so I figure go for it.,, but I don't know exactly what to buy,,, don't know what the diff is between chipsets and sockets and cores, that one guy said the Northwood core runs cooler than the prescott so I know that's a good thing, as heat becomes an issue with these powerful CPUs, but i'm still unclear on the sockets and chipsets, what's good what's not, I"m sure it's all good , just don't want to make a mistake..

LGA775 is the new P4 that has no pins on the CPU, the pins are on the socket on the motherboard. I can't recall if there are any Northwood processors in LGA775 but I wouldn't bother with it just yet. The Prescott isn't all bad, it does eat less power and I think has more instructions than the Northwood but the thermal issue pretty much outweighs the pros.
Chipset should be Intel's 865 or 875. If you're looking for PCI-E support I'd wait a while, there's a better 9xx chipset to be release in December.
NLEs should be on an SMP system. How much are you looking at spending for such a rig?FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -
what is PCI-E support? And the prescott chip, if i get a better cooling system, is the heat still something to worry about with long encode times?
