  1. i have an avi file that can't be opened by any of my programs....i guess i don't have the codec....how do i find out which codec i need

  2. avi requires a divx codec or xvid codec

    then u should be able to play it in windows media player

    AVIcodec or Gspot are the tools to use. Find out what codecs the video file requires and download them.

    Avoid installing all files in codec packs as they cause more problems than they cure. FFDshow will give you most of the DIVX codecs. Look to 'Codecs' in 'Tools' to the left for more.

    If AVIcodec or Gspot can't tell you what it is, it may be corrupted. You could try some of the repair utilities in 'Tools' <<< for AVIs. I have found a few files that noway will play on anything. Time to hit the delete when you have done all you can.
