  1. I have an ADSTech USB Instant DVD device and the highest quality it will capture at is 5000 kbps. Is there any way I can change it so it will capture at say 10000, for example? I'm not using a S-Video cable, RCA Cables. Anything?

That rate is limited by the app software. You use MyDVD or CapWiz for the capture app, right?

With 3 choices for bitrate - "Good" (3Mbps), "Better" (4 Mbps) and "Best" (5 Mbps) right?

Unless you can find apps with IDVD codecs, I believe you're stuck with those two apps :P

You could go to ADS 's website and download their latest CapWiz v3.5 app, or
even v3.1 - - they have a Custom Settings window. There, you can
set to whatever bitrate you want.., as high as 15k

It works on under Windows 98 on up. (W98SE) recommended) But don't
worry abuot which device it is to be used for. It will auto sense your device
(or version, since your's is a lower version) and find it's Driver Profile, there-by
calling up your devices driver. But, if you have trouble, you can find this
under the Capture settings Tab. Wait. That's for Ulead. Mine came
with US 7SE (the key is built-in to the CD-ROM disk they suppied w/
    my DVD Xpress)
But US 7SE has the feature to do a Hard-Switch to find your device. It will
    find it !!

If the highest quality you can capture at is 5k then it could be that the other
values are either grayed out or not shown, due to your USB I/O throughput,
which CapWiz is determining. I know that w/ my on-board USB, and even
though it says it's USB 2.0 speed, the device is saying it's not enough, and
bumps me down to 4k bitratel.., all else is grayed out. I could hack it to
go higher, but then that cause drop-outs; frame drop; or audio sync issues.

    Good luck,

  4. I will bet it is his USB I/O throughput as well. I still have an older USB 1.1 ADS box that was capped at 5Mb due I suppose to the interface. Interestingly enough, when I look back at some of the caps I had made using the ADS at 5Mb the video quality seems to (IMHO) surpass that of the Huffy caps I make with my AIW 9600. The problem that I always had with the ADS was the horrific A/V sync issues.

My sympathies babyboo I had the USB1.1 IDVD too, when I was a video noob 2-1/2 years ago. The sync issues just about drove me to drink

But I always found it odd that the 5Mbps cap was used when USB1.1 will support much higher transfer rates, even with audio factored in

The original ADS USB InstantDvd did not hardware encode both the audio and video, only the vidio, and suffered from audio sync problems depending on the system setup

Current versions of capwiz will not work with this device due to changes in the hardware

Current versions of InstantDvd, InstantDvd +DV or DVDExpress can capture with bitrates up to 15mb/s via usb2.

If your usb ports are supposed to be usb2 but the connection is only connecting at usb1, I suspect a driver issue. There was a MS update on this issue

    Yes, I knew that:

Slip of the keyboard since I use a USB2 Snazzi now that encodes both

  8. I knew that as well...audio outs were routed to the line-in on my sound card. I believe they limited it to 5Mb because they claimed in their documentation that it was the highest "sustainable" rate for USB1.1. I would have liked to have put that to the test but there wasn't any way around the cap that I was aware of. Despite the A/V sync issues, I loved the quality of the video. I still have the box stashed away in a closet somewhere.

  9. I have installed the v3.5 of CapWiz for InstantDVD because you guys told you it would detect my Device Profile or whatever, but it gives me an error message saying it cannot find my device even though the device is plugged in, hooked up properly and is clearly identified and drivers installed for it in Device Manager. I have a USB2.0 cable, so will I be able to capture at 15k? What are other programs I could use to capture the video at 15 or higher bitrates? Someone should make a small program for TV to PC capture that is small like WinDV is for DV cams.

But I always found it odd that the 5Mbps cap was used when USB1.1 will support much higher transfer rates, even with audio factored in
    Throughput for USB1.1 is 12mb/bits/sec (that's mbits/sec)
(mind you, my onboard is usb2.0 but this device does not like it and
bumps it down to 1.1 instead) (So, I had to get a dedicated usb2.0 card)

    * That's ( 12mb / 8 ) = 1.5mb/sec (that's mbytes/sec)

Throughput for USB 2.0 is 480mb/bits/sec
    * That's ( 480mb / 8 ) = 60mb/sec

DV only needs 3.5mb/sec (of the 60mb/sec) to transfer over firewire.
These are small chunks of data transfering over firewire for DV.
With my Ali USB 2.0 card, I can capture samiltaniously, with your
Xpress box and ADVC-100 Firewire together and w/out issues. Because
both only require a small portion of MB/sec to transfer ( if using USB2.0 )
    .
And, both are transmiting data chunks to one same USB2 card, which also
just so happens to be my ADS USB drive enclosure kit. I have a 40g drive
in this usb2 box. That's on an XP-1800+ cpu setup, FWIW.

Maybe some apps are cofigured to push data in smaller chunks per sec.
I don't know. But, when I first tried (several times) to capture at
8mb/sec w/ my Xpress, I had no issues. That was under UL 7SE.

I've researched a little (when I first got my Xpress box) and I found that
there were many version of capWiz made. All the way to version 2x (is when
    I stopped searching)

I suspect that the newer ones in stores today, are comming w/ v3.5 (though
mine came w/ v3.1 already) I bought mine about 6 months ago at Wal-Mart.
I finally opended it about a month ago.

    @ state of mind

Sorry that you are not having an success with your device. But imo,
it should work. Did you try using UL instead. There are two place to
try under File menu. One is Plug-ins and other one is just above it (or
two, though I fogot the name of the option) But that's in UL 7SE.. not
capWiz. I'm using UL 7SE because it works much better (though startup
time is slow when capturing) but it shows all my other capture devices..
DV cam; ADVC-100; ATI Rage Furo Pro; Winfast; etc.
    .
As long as their is a properly installed set of drivers, UL 7SE should
see it and include it in it's list of capture devices. Maybe you have
to re-install UL 7SE again (after you install your capture driver(s) that
    is)

    EDITED -- see above.

    Cheers,
    -vhelp
