I have been using an Epson R200 for quite a while - excellent product.
Have settled on TY +R silver inkjet prinable for the last while. They proved to be the most compatible with DVD players, and produced the fewest coasters. The TYs cost more, but I think I am spending less, since I have had only one fail in about 300 burns. Here in Canada, they cost about or just over $1.00 per disc, taxes and shipping included.
DVD burners are a NEC 3500 and a Plextor 712.
However - silver printable is not for everyone. White can also be very nice. If you are putting a spray on, for protection, it may look a lot different on a silver disc than on a white disc.
I would love to try some of the TDK photo quality glossy printable DVDs, but at $45.00 each, I will wait.....
Ditto for Lightscribe disks. At $1.75 each, plus taxes and shipping, I will wait!
For those in Canada, I have been purchasing from:

Excellent service, and very good prices.

I don't know if that means Sam's Club is not carrying the 16X printables anymore or what, but last I checked they were still on the Sam's Club website. -
Spend a few extra bucks and get the better stuff. It costs a little more for a reason - actually many reasons.
I've used both Verbatim/MCC DVD-R and Taiyo Yuden DVD+R with an R200. Both manufacturers had very high quality media (only 1 bad disc out of 100 Verbatims and no bad discs in 150 Taiyo yudens).
As far as the printable surface, I prefer the TY. Verbatim's pritable area is larger than the standard area on a commercially stamped DVD at 21mm inner and 120mm outer (goes all the way to the outer edge). TY printable area is exactly the same size as the commercial discs - 23mm inner and 119mm outer. This may not seem like much, but when you constantly have to Photoshop the inner ring area to avoid the white ring on Verbatim discs, it gets old. I also noticed the Verbatim discs weigh a little more than the TY, they almost feel like the discs with those stick-on labels.
I buy nothing buy TY DVD+R now. If your drive supports setting the booktype for DVD+R, it's the way to go. I have a first-gen Sony set top player that wouldn't play anything until I fed it a TY DVD+R I set to DVD-ROM booktype. I've purchased from supermediastore.com and meritline.com and had no problems from either.
BTW, spray the printed disc (after it dries for 24 hrs) with Krylon crystal clear acrylic satin finish - pt# 1313. It protects the ink from getting smeared and gives it a very professional look.
