Hey,
I’m going to be buying myself an Epson R300 printer very soon, and I would like advice on the best DVD media to use.
I am looking for the best printable media which gives very good quality when printed onto, and very good compatibility. I would like 8x speed disks.
I have a pioneer 108 dvd writer, (Im in the uk if it makes a difference)
Also, if you think there’s a better printer for printing on dvd disks, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.![]()

I'm in the US. I have had great success with Prodisc Media with my Pioneer 108. I get most of my media from www.supermediastore.com. Hope that is a start.
-
What prodisc media have you been using? Is it good quality when printed on top of the disk?
-
I use DVD-R (Disc ID: MCC 02RG20) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x).They are 8x DVD-r's. The Quality is really great. I use the Epson 900 printer. So far all of my customers love them.

Hi werewolf_02,
When I was in the UK I used www.blankdiscshop.co.uk - excellent prices, excellent, customer service quick postage and excellent post-purchase support should you need it.
They may well have the discs your after.
Also, update you profile with your location - makes it easier for everyone. There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Ok I will soon dammon.
What do you think is the best printable dvds from that site? www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
Preferably dvds that can be printed very far into the disk. -
These are the same ones that I use from www.supermediastore.com. the media code states ProdiscS04. I would get a small sample to see how they work for you. I burn all my DVD's to the 4400 mb mark.
{DV 3103} Bulkpaq "Full-Face Printable "(4x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 25
"Full-Face Printable" means you can print right up to the hold in the centre of the disc.
ADVDINFO: ProdiscS04. -
I would like 8x disks.
{DV 3166} Ritek G05 "Full-Face Printable" A Grade (8x) DVD-R Disc in Packs of 50
What do you think those ones would be like? -
I have not tried the Ritek's. I would get a sample pack to see how they work with your setup.

I bought the Epson Stylus Photo R300 about 3 months ago and have never looked back. What a great printer!! My wife and I use it to print not only the disks - but some incredible photo quality paper pictures. We print on different brands of data cd's and dvd-r's and haven't had any problems. I'm inclined to believe that if you should just select the media that you are comfortable with (Ritex, Prodisc, etc.) and you won't have any problems with the printing part of it.

If you want excellent quality dvd-r, that are printable, go to buy.com. They have Maxells and Verbatims for $39.26 and $35.15 respectively per 50. I have used the Maxells and they are great, but not hub-printable. The Verbatims for $35.15 are also not hub-printable. I have also used the Verbatim hub-printable, which are now $38.05 per 50 at buy.com. Taiyo Yuden is also high quality and have hub printable for about $2.00 a piece, but can't remember which site, you'll have to do a search.

P.S.
I forgot, I have the Epson R200, same print engine as the R300. Get great results, but remember, the print is not impervious to moisture. You can smear the ink with just a little bit of moisture, like sweaty fingers, now matter how long you let it dry. You can do a search here for how to seal it with spray paint. I use Krylon Satin, less than $3.00 at Walmart. Protect the bottom and put a light coat, gives a nice finish and protects the ink.
Here's how I protect the bottom. Take a standard cd case. Open it and put a doubled napkin or paper towel over the tray. Cut a hole in the middle of the napkin first. Snap the dvd over the hub, which is now sticking out of the napkin. The dvd is pulled down into the napkin, sealing off the outside edge. Then spray. -

You can buy the R200. It shares the same printer specifications with the R300, minus the flash card reader and, I think, a LCD display. You will end up saving $$ for the same quality prints.
You have the Pioneer 108, therefore you will probably prefer -R format.
I have taken a look at this UK site. If burning quality is important for you, they have Taiyo Yuden 8X -R hub printable. Lucky you, there is not TY hub printable in Canada.
Ritek G05 has a better printing surface but TY is a better media. Humm, tough choice. To me, I prefer to use TY. No need to test each dvd after burning. I only test once in a while. With Ritek, I test them all for pi/pif. No choice.
BTW, I have the pioneer 108 and the R200.
Once you are finished with the printing, this link will suggest you many interesting techniques on how to spray disks.

Ooops, there is no prodisc on this site but plenty of verbatim.
I have read that the printing surface is very good on verbatim disks - maybe equivalent to Ritek. I have not try them myself, I cannot find some in Canada at a decent price.
Happy burning printing and spraying! -
Thanks for the reply.
The Taiyo Yuden disks seem pretty expensive :/
Also, on the dvd media reviews part of this site, they didnt seem to get very good rating unless im looking at the wrong dvd.

Plays on 3 DVD Players
Plays not on 2 DVD Players
At the moment im using dvd disks 4x but not printable, for 25p each.
Is there no good 8x printable disks for not much more than that?
I also want ones that give good quality when printed onto -
Werewolf,
Plays on 3 DVD Players
Plays not on 2 DVD Players
This does not impress me. TY are known to be amongst the best.
But I also understand that $$ is important.
Try the ritek G05. You should be ok! -

ADVDINFO: .RITEK G05 £15.99 So thats £31.98 per 100.....
Thats more double the price for the TY disks, boy they would need to be fantastic to justify the extra cost..
The ritek Go5 are on their way so i shoud have some to burnt by tommorow night...Not bothered by small problems...

Werewolf:
Maybe there is a better place to buy TY in UK, because this price (£69.98 for 100) is way too high for TY02.
I test my burned ritek with cd/dvd speed, transfer rate and/or pi/pif. Not scientific but the results are soooo variable between the disk from the same splindle that I prefer doing so.

I think I paid $2.37 plus tax at Walmart, still pretty cheap per disk. I give it a quick light coat in each direction from about 10-12 inches away, turning the dvd 90 degrees each time. This gives it 4 light coats. The key is LIGHT coats so that you don't get a build up that may throw the dvd out of balance. The purpose is to seal the print.
