I have a Power Mac G4 500MHz (AGP Graphics) with 768MB RAM). I'm currently using imovie 3 and iDVD 3 to create movies shot with my digital camcorder. I would like to use imovie 4 and iDVD 4; however iDVD 4 requires a 733 MHz G4 processor or better so I don't have enough speed. I think I can use imovie 4. Here's my question: Can I use imovie 4 to create my movie since it has more features than imovie 3, and can I then import my completed movie into iDVD 3 to create a completed DVD? Please advise. Thanks.

There is no reason I can think of that it won't work with iDVD 3 although I haven't tried it. iDVD 4 added some new features that require greaty processing power, but those aren't connected to anything iMovie does.

Hi Everyone:
Thanks for your replies. I was wondering whether I can still try to run iDVD 4 on my machine with the specs listed above. Someone told me I can but it will just take longer. Has any one tried to run iDVD 4 with a G4 slower than the 733 MHz recommended by Apple? Please advise. Thanks. -
I don't think the iDVD4 software installer will let you install it because it will analyze your mac and discover that it's not fast enough.
However, I think I read once about a hack that will let you install it by fooling the iDVD4 installer into accepting a slower mac.
Try a search of this forum on that topic. -
You can install iDVD4 and for that matter the whole
'04 iLife suite onto a G4 lower than a 733.
I maintain a G4 466 with iMovie 4 and iDVD4,
with external DVD burner, that I use primarily for
(a) creating quick iDVD templates to later transfer
to my G4 Dual 1 to import the project into DVDSP3.
and (b) to answer any technical questions about
iMovie for older G4 users.
All I did was hookup an external DVD drive ( an a05)
and installed it and it went."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

If you go the IMovie 4 to iDVD3 route, I think you will be fine, but won't be able to use the Chapter Markers import feature.

Hi Everyone: Thanks for your replies. I just finished create a movie with imovie 4 and I've created chapter markers. I'm now read to import it into iDVD 3 to create my movie. Do you mean that iDVD 3 will not be able to import the chapters markers I created in my imovie 4 files? Please advise. Thanks.

I think that was a feature of the 4.0 versions of the two apps. But go ahead and try it, maybe it will work.

Hi willrob:
I have successfully imported chapter markers in a movie I created with iMovie 4 into iDVD. Thanks for your replies and insight.
