I m trying to save my old VHS tapes. What I m thinking is to capture in 480X576 (SVCD PAL) and then through the material (burn) a DVD and not a CD. The obvious reason is capacity. A DVD disc is like 6 or 7 CDs so its economy in space (my VHS material is huge).
I dont want to capture in DVD format cause its useless since VHS is rather pure quality and there is no rerason for high DVD mpeg bitrates and huge files and big encoding times.

But can I treat a DVD like a big CD or not?

    Thank you in advance

If you can capture the VCR signal in MPEG form, you can burn them to a DVD but playback will be problematic. There aren't many standalone DVD players that can read and play .MPG files. You'll probably end up playing them on your PC.

These guides cover the authoring of an SVCD MPEG file to a DVD. Enjoy!

Just my 2 cents but if I were you I would capture in 352x576 (1/2 d1 pal). It is fully dvd compliant and you can still use svcd bitrates to get a lot of video on one dvd. 480x576 is fine if your player reads svcd but you will get more compatibility if you capture at 352x576..

    Thanks freebird

I can get your point. You say something very logic, that a lower bitrate 352X576 DVD mpeg file is very close to a 480X576 SVSD mpeg file in both quality and Mbs. So I m gonna do it this way to avoid extra convertions.

    Thank you all

Good plan. SVCD DVD's are problematic.

Also, by using 1/2 D1 DVD, you have the option of using a higher bit rate than SVCD standard provides.
