capturing problems

i was wondering if u guys can recommend a program to record tv shows to my hard disk in avi format.. i used showshifter which is quite good but the demo period ended. is there a similar program

i treid to use virtual dub and avi io but both gave the error shown on the linked gif file (i hope attaching works . first time trying it) i made sure my capture device is turned off and made sure all teh services are turned off but it still gives this error



I am currentlyusing life view suite that came with my packard bell tv card but it only records as mpeg1 or uncompressed avi abd also it does not have the timer control to tell the program "only record programs for 50 minutes after i start the recording"
