It depends on how fast a DVD rom drive you have and how fast your processor is. Probably no more than an hour, and could be quite a bit less.

    27 minutes, 55 seconds, 112 milliseconds

Ripping depends primarily on your DVD-ROM and the speed and configuration of your hard drive(s).

Secondary factors include amount of RAM, the complexity of encryption on the DVD, how fragged your hard drive is, CPU, and I'm sure there are many more.

Transcoding is much the same, although the CPU has a greater influence on the fluctuation of transcoding speeds than any other factor.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. But would it be realistic for a single computer to take days to do it? Surely the iBook G3 can work faster than that?

Even a slow PC would do it in no more than a few hours. Re-encoding (as opposed to transcoding) might take up to 24 hours on a slow machine if set to VBR with 4 or more passes.

What software are you using ?

I'd PM a mod and get this moved to the MAC forum. There'll be people (did I say people because I meant hobbits ) that can help you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Do you rip the hard drive first, then transcode, then burn

    or

    transcode while ripping, then burn

DVD2One can't rip so I'd assume DVD2OneX is the same.
    If in doubt, Google it.

DVDShrink is a transcoder, but it can rip also. DVD2One is just a transcoder. nothing more. That is why it's kinda funny that DVDShrink is free, yet you have to pay for DVD2One
    If in doubt, Google it.
