I intend to buy a new computer system. My main interest is to primarily transfer all my analogue tapes to DVD. I would also like to edit the files before burning to DVD.
I'd like some advice on which OS, video / audio cards, HD requirements would best serve my purpose.
Any other tips would be most helpful

    Thanks

    I'd recommend at least:

    3 Ghz P4
    1 Gb RAM (or more)
    x2 200 GB SATA HDD (w/ 8 MB cache)
Windows XP or 2000 (so you can use NTFS file structure)
    capture card or breakout box
    Firewire card for DV capture

add to that a canopus advc-100 analog to digital converter for your vhs analog tapes to dvd. also get a pioneer 108 or plextor 712 dvd burner.

  5. As my background is computer repair and support; I build my own computers from the "ground-up".

Here is the current hardware that I'm using for my video conversion process:
JVC HR-S2902U VCR w/S-video output/input & component (RCA stereo connection)
Canopus ADVC-100 (firewire connection to PC)

    computer consists of:
    Intel P4 @3.0ghz
    Intel MB D865PERLL
    1.0gb Kingston PC3200 (Dualchannel mode)
    MSI FX5500 8x AGP
    Creative Audigy sound
Western Digital 60gb w/8mb cache PATA system/OS drive
    Seagate 160gb SATA storage drive
    Plextor PX-708a DVD burner

    Primary software used.
    Windows XP pro SP1a

Windows Movie maker (used for initial VCR capture and tape editing)

DVDSanta (used to convert the Movie Maker file to DVD format; then used to burn final output to DVD-r media)

Since I purchased these parts at the beginning of the year, I don't remember how much I originally paid for them. But as close as I remember: VCR $100 / Canopus ADVC $300 / Kingston memory $300 / Intel MB $150? / Intel proc $200? / FX5500 $100 / case $80 / Plextor burner $170 / XP pro $180?
