I was curious is the DVP-642 is able to decode the ac3 that is now being put into a lot of the recent xvid files. I watched one last night and I know it had ac3 but didn't sound like the movie was in suround mode. There was sound coming out of the suround speakers, but didn't notice things moving behind and stuff to make me think it was working. Anyone know?

Hello,
Well it could be ac3 dolby digital 2.0 surround. That's the pro logic with the mono rear speakers. It can be quite good if mixed properly.
Why don't you use gspot to identify the codecs??? It may tell you if it's 5.1 surround or not. That would make a big difference.
Also, all dvd players support ac3 audio.

It is 5.1, I guess the question more specifically, will the player decode it within a divx/xvid file. Meaning it doesn't have to be combined with an mpeg2 authored DVD or anything.
