Hi
I have 2 computers networked togeather they are both sharing a external adsl modem that is hooked up to comp 1, at the mpment as soon as comp 1 is on the internet then comp 2 is also on the internet, is there anything I can do to comp 2 so it has to ask me before going on the internet.
In other words I would like to go online with comp 1 but not let comp 2 be able to connect untill I need it to.
Thanks

If it is Internet Connection Sharing then you could always turn it on and off - but that'd be a real pain (takes a reboot if I recall correctly).
Why not pick up a router? They can be had for about $20 nowadays... -
Yes I am using ICS, looks like I need a router. Thanks for the quick response.

Both computers are connected and will continue to be as long as you have both computers hooked up to the modem.
A router is not going to change that.
The router uses network address translation(Nat) to shield the computers address.
When you get a router the router acts as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol(dhcp) server.
What is the big deal?
If the other computer is not being used at the time, then there is no harm.
You can however prevent access based on the media access control address(mac) of the network card. -

Sorry if I am misleading anybody. When I switch both computers on the modem has got a permanant connection but I have to tell it to dial out to find my ISP, as soon as it dials out I can go on the internet on both computers, no problem, but I would like to keep one of them isolated (from the internet) untill I tell it to connect.

Are you sure you have dsl?
Adsl is always connected and you just launch your browser. -
Yes its ADSL my connection is only half a meg but in the UK thats the norm.

There is no dialing required.

I actually had it for a month as a beta tester. You can even get busy signals -

What was your conclusion?
Were you happy with it?
I don't have to deal with that because I have dsl through my phone company. -
dialup DSL sucks! and I mean BIG TIME!
TV over copper, at the time, it blew cable quality away. I'm not sure about now though. Heck, I don't even think they offer it anymore. I think the just rolled it out to a few cities and that was it. Kinda like VHDSL -
