Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me with port forwarding for Netgear? The version is MR814v2 and I have two computers linked to use one cable box. My downloads have been going a bit slow recently so I was just wondering if I could improve the speed by using port forwarding to open up the ports. However, I've searched for a guide but I can't find one for my router model. Here are some additional questions.

1.) On which computer do I do the port forwarding configuration on? The one linked to the wireless router or the one linked only to the blue, receiver? The one I'm using for downloading is the one that's only linked to the receiver.

    Any help is appreciated!

How would I know if I have a static IP address? Someone else set up the router for me so I'm not sure.

If you have cable, your router probably doesn't have a static address, but your computer might. You would have to check your computer's network settings. The router can set a static address for each computer.

I would log onto the router and look around a little before you change anything. It's real easy to mess up and hard to fix at times.

You usually log on from the computer that is physically connected to the router.

  4. Opening ports isnt going to speed up your downolads....
Only thing that will improve the speeds is possibly a change in MTU/RWIN settings on your PC's.
Here is a good place to test the settings on your system.

The downloads I'm talking about is Bittorrent. I read on a guide somewhere that if you have a router or a firewall, it will block off some of the ports and prevent you from downloading from all of the uploaders, that's why you only get small seeds even when there are many uploaders. They say that you must go into your router's configuration and enter in BT to open the ports up for them.

Yes, just use the guide I provided and open up the ports that the bittorrent client uses. Or you could just get BitComet, which uses ports that are already open. If you pay your cable bill, you will know if you have a staic IP address, they usually tag on an extra $50 a month.

Ah well you didnt say that in the OP......

The port forwarding configuration goes on the router and you forward to ports to which ever PC is doing the downloading..
There should be some info on which ports you need to open in the help files for BT.
