Is there any good source out there that goes over capturing video from the web such as from sites like MTV/VH1/Launch and sites with quicktime video? I know the quality of these videos are pretty low but would still like to be able to save them to my hard drive.

Download Camstudio. It'll take anything from your desktop and make it into an AVI file
You can set a custom capture area. Verrrry handy little app -
I've used a program called CapturePad. There is a freeware version here - http://www.capturepad.com/freeware.htm
I'm sure there are better things out there, but it has worked for me, and it allows you to save using most any codec you have installed on your system. -
are these the only two options? Is their a way to capture the source directly??

Cam Studio should record everything that appears on your desktop, like this one I used it for:
If you see it, it should grab it. Do you get an error, or does the capture end up being blank? -
well on mtv videos is captures everything except where the video is playing it is blank...

for example the crucial live performance video, ive tried capturing full screen and just the area of the video, caputures audio but not that video -
I am having a problem with Camstudio. I used to use it, but haven't tried in it in awhile. however, when I tried it today, it seemed to record ok, but when I tried to save it it said "File creation error- unable to rename/copy file. The file may be opened by another application." However, no other applications should be using any part of this program....any ideas?

It locks onto a stream and downloads the root file behind it. Downloading Net Transport is free but the author does ask for "donations" on his site.
