Anyone know of a good stand-alone DNR box for cleaning up old VHS and Beta tapes? I have tried the JVC 7900 S-VHS vcr and its internal TBC and DNR do a good job of removing flicker from the colors, especially for EP mode recordings. I would like to have an external box that does the same thing, preferably low-cost (less than $200).
I also tried running my Beta video into the JVC 7900 video input and then turning on the DNR of the 7900 hoping that it would clean the signal but it didn't. THe DNR of the JVC 7900 is between the tape heads and the video output jack.
Another approach would be to record my Betas to my JVC on a S-VHS tape and then play back the tape through the DNR of the JVC and into my DVD recorder. This is a cornball way of getting the DNR to work for my old Beta tapes, but it would work.

The JVC DR-M10 DVD recorder does this. It filters some video noise and mildly enhances the image automatically prior to recording with circuits very similar to what is in your JVC 7900 VCR, but tweaked for MPEG2 encoding. The end results can be excellent. eCost has a good price on it:

Thanks gang.
I bought a Pioneer 510 about 6 months ago. The DR-M10S indeed has the Digipure noise reduction, something I wasn't aware of. I could record my old VHS to the M10 on -RW and edit on my 510, which has a hard drive, then finalize on my 510.
The 510 isn't good for recording old VHS tapes. It blacks out and doesn't have anything like Digipure. I still like the 510, though. It has good video quality on stable signals and nice features.
I've been impressed with JVC items and their built-in DNR and TBC. -
Some professional TBC's have variable noise reduction or "coring" adjustments that do a good job... they soften the picture a bit, though.
