  1. If I took a finalized -R disc in Video Mode recorded from my DVR-7000 Pioneer unit, and use the 520 to burn it to the HardDrive in realtime to make a new menu with thumbnails, then burn back to dvd-r on the 520, will I lose quality? Is there a re-encode in the process? Do I burn back in realtime also?

    THANKS!

I can't tell for sure but in reading the description for this in the manual I believe there is decoding and re-encoding involved in the transfer from the DVD to the hard drive. There would not be if you used the disc back-up feature but that wouldn't let you change the menu.

To limit any loss in picture quality try to transfer at the same recorder settings as were used on the DVD. If you use High Speed Copy to burn the new DVD from the hard drive there won't be any re-encoding during that process.

You can use your computer to transfer the video from the DVD and create a new menu without any need for re-encoding. Plus you don't have to wait for real-time transfer. This presumes you have a computer and software to do video DVD creation.
