  1. Hey there everyone. Just wondering if someone could help. Here is my problem.

I am running Azureus.....I've always ran it. Well, I go and reinstall windows xp because it had been about 2 years since I did a fresh install.

Well, when I reinstall Azureus, I can't get anything other than a damn yellow face again. I found my ip address, in the start>run>cmd>ipconfig.

Go to forward ports 6881-6889 in my linksys wrt45g....and enter the last 3 digits in the column and click the check mark for it to be enabled for both protocols. I know you don't need udp but I didn't have a problem with that last time and ive tried doing just tcp and it still stays yellow.

Under Azureus the enable UPnP is checked and the port is 6881.

Am I missing something? Is there some stupid setting im not hitting? The download rate is usually around 13kbs.....sometimes it will spike to 40 or so but it should still be a constant 70-130 like it used to be. I know there are enough users on it.......65 seeding and 430 leeching.

Just wondering if it was something I am missing. Thanks for the help.

If I were you, I'd get ahold of BitComet. With BitComet you do not have to set up port forwarding, it uses ports that are already open. I couldn't live without that program back in the days of AOL. :P

I too use Azureus and have (used to use) a WRT54G. A couple things to note:

First, Azerus doesn't use ports other than TCP 6881, so you're only opening holes for hackers by forwarding TCP/UDP 6882-6889 to your box. And you're correct, it doesn't use UDP (even if the UDP option is enabled), so again, you're only opening holes... but too each his own.

Where is this UPnP option, in the router or in Azureus' options? Unless you know you need it, turn it off.

I am guessing your total torrents and connections per torrent are still at their defaults? 100 connections per torrent and 1000 overall? That's WAY TO MANY connections for the WRT54G. Mine used to approach 500 connections and it would literally grind my router to a halt - no more incoming connections and no more outgoing connections; the WRT54G's NAT/routing table grew far to large for it to handle efficiently. I would imagine you're getting yellow faces because no more connections are being accepted, and the ones that are already connected are slowing to a crawl because of the router.

I fixed my problems by installing a 2nd NIC into my server and binding Azureus to that NIC (which gets my 2nd static IP from my ISP), completely bypassing the WRT54G alltogether - this is where that "Override IP address sent to tracker - Only use if you really know why you need it" option comes into play - all the trackers thought my torrents were being served by my WRT54G IP, and since it was no longer forwarding 6881 to Azureus, it appeared as though I wasn't uploading anything, so my downloads began to crawl too. So I inserted the 2nd IP into that dialog box and everything works hunky dory now since trackers know my proper IP and all bittorrent traffic bypasses the router. But this is probably not a viable solution for you...

In all honesty, I never did figure out why my downloads were crawling, since mine began very fast, but a couple days in, my downloads crawled, other than the routers NAT issues.... but my uploads stayed at a constant 50kps. So I said to hell with the router and went with the 2nd NIC.

I'd look at fiddling with the max. connections per torrent/globally and your max. active torrents settings. Failing that, I'd consider putting my Azureus box on the DMZ and open incoming TCP 6881 and outgoing TCP 1024-65535 in a software firewall. Or, experiment with Port Triggering in the WRT54G instead of forwarding - some people say it's easier on the router and subsequently can handle more connections.

If you only want to DL one torrent at a time TRy using bitTornado, I have had speeds over 300 with BitTornado after tweeking the setting a little.

  5. Thanks for the help everyone......I am still not sure what the problem is. I am going to try a couple of methods suggested including a different client. Thanks HillJack for the lengthy suggestions......I am going to try those first. I hope they work. For some reason my ports aren't being forwarded even though I enable them in the router. I use a few online port scans to see if they are being opened but they all come back as being stealth.

Last night I unplugged my router and just connected the modem to the computer and instantly saw speeds of around 170kbs. Atleast I know its not a setting in Azureus but has something to do with my router.

I guess I will try a few other things suggested and I hope I get it to work.....otherwise I will have to unplug my router every time and then the 3 other computers on it won't get the internet..........but then again, thats my roommates problem and not mine

    Thanks again everyone.

2nd all nighter in a row, this makes sense in my head but don't expect everything to come out correctly :P Anyways, if connecting your computer directly to the modem increases download speeds, it could be a few things:
-The cable that goes from your router to your computer is damaged, if it's not wireless.
-Your router is old, and kills your connection.
-You do not have port forwarding setup correctly.
-You have an antivirus or firewall.

    Another possibilitie or two:
-You're uploading much more than your downloading, as in, your uploading is taking all of your bandwidth.
-You're using another high bandwidth using program at the same time as you are using Azureus.

I'm going to stop while this still makes some sense.

On second thought, did you disable the Windows Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)?

  9. Yep got rid of the windows firewall....no other firewalls on my computer except for the built in router. I also tried that bitcomet program suggested and it works pretty good.........downloaded a small file(3mb) and got up to 60kbs before it ended.

Wonder what is wrong with my port forwarding.....I read a bunch of places that you need a static ip in order to port forward but I know for a fact that I never set up a static ip before and it worked flawlessly.

There was some guide I followed a long time ago and had in my favorites but since I reinstalled windows it is gone. Damn I knew I should have saved those.

You don't need a static IP to set up port forwarding, you just want an IP that sticks for a while. If you IP changes everyday, then you need to make changes to your port forwarding settings everyday.

I had similar problems with Azureus. Unfortunately, I only got it to work with trial and error and can't seem to duplicate what I did right.

Your ISP may be interfering. Try changing the port to a different number. I used 5150, then configured the router to pass that port also.

Dig around the forum for your router, you may find some tips there. It seems every time I reinstalled Azureus, I fought the 'yellow icon'. I liked the program, but the problems drove me away. I was also unhappy with JAVA and how the program loaded down my system.

Another thing that worked for me on a cable modem was to unplug the power to the cable modem and the router. Wait a minute or two, then plug the modem in, waiting till it acquires the signal and locks, then plug in the router. This worked several times. You shouldn't loose any settings.

I went to Bitcomet mainly because it gets through my router without much setup. Speed? Still not happy, but I think my ISP is mucking it up.

When Azureus worked the speeds are the same as I get with Bitcomet, but I had less problems with the setup of BC.
