  1. Hi,

I have a Pinnacle VCD capture card.
I am trying to capture video footage from my Sony Digital 8 camera though an S-plug. When I attempted to perform capture, the system only offer me the highest resolution of 352x-288
    Questions:
    (1) The limitation of the highest offered resolution is due to the capture card? or my Video Camera? or the software?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

What is the model # for the capture card?

You have Digital 8 - Why not get a firewire card.

Typically the card will limit the resolution.

If you are using s-video then try using Virtual Dub to capture and use 'custom settings'
Virtual Dub will currently NOT work with Digital Video

  3. Definitely get a Firewire/1394 card. Your video is already digitized and compressed in the Digital8 camera at 720x480 30fps at about 5:1 compression. This gives you a good high quality source. The file sizes will be around 3.6MB per second of video. When you "capture" via Firewire its really more like a file transfer.
You will lose quality if you output s-video from the camera and recompress it with an analog capture card. Just capture the DV format AVI files from the Digital8 camera via Firewireand edit with a DV compatible program, then encode to MPEG for VCD/SVCD with TMPGEnc or other encoder.
