I recently had to replace the dvd burner in my computer. I purchased a Memorex DVD+/- DRL WLIF 16 Version BWSB. In the past in had used DVD Decrypter and Instant Copy (Ver 1) with my HP burner. I had excellent results with the movies that I did. I'm not great at what I'm doing, but I was very happy with the way they turned out. Now, I however, was unable to get Ver I to work, (not surprising) so I purchased version 8. When I try to run the program like I did with ver 1, I get an Access violation at address 0000000.... warning, and if I run it another way it doesn't recognize the disc to write to. It's like it isn't even there. I've tried different brands, etc.
I also am getting microsoft errors reports all the time that are connected with Instant copy. Is the SF2 causing part of the problem? Can you give me any advice? What would you recommend I use with DVD Decrypter to use with my burner if not Instant Copy? Thanks so much.

  2. It's been reported on various sites that some people have had trouble with burning apps after SP2 upgrade. Nero gets some mention in that regard, and I had a minor problem myself.

Try reinstalling your burning app(s), also your ASPI layer, then run aspichk.exe to verify. If you have Nero, try an update. If newer firmware is available for your writer, you could try that, but doing so has risks.

Has the new burner worked for you at all?
Have you tried re-installing Instant Copy?
Have you tried DVDShrink instead of IC?
What makes you suspect SP2? Did your trouble start after the upgrade?

    Good luck.

I have been able to burn a cd with the new burner. I have tried re-installing IC. Where do I find aspichk.exe? I know just enough to be dangerous. There is no new firmware available, I had checked that.
In the windows error log it keeps listing a faulting error module icopy.exe.
The reason I brought up SP2 was that I didn't have it on my computer before. It was restored because a faulty fan corrupted everything. At the same time the dvd burner stopped working. Yes, the trouble started after the upgrade.

  4. Google for "aspichk.exe" and click on the first item on the results list. Or go to www.adaptec.com and look for drivers. If you get the latest ASPI driver, version 4.71, aspichk.exe is included. Or PM me your email and I'll send it to you. But you can find it yourself, right? Good luck.

Thanks for all your help. I don't have Nero. But if these other things don't work, I'll try that also. Thanks again.

  6. I'm surprised no one else has weighed in on this.

A few more thoughts: Don't neglect to defrag, run antivirus. Also, be careful about installing too many apps for the same or similar tasks. Eventually, chances are you're gunna get compatibility problems. I'm thinking specifically about Roxio, there are known issues there.

Wouldn't hurt to look at some Microsoft Knowledge Base articles having to do with SP2. Or go to a forum like www.softwaretricksandtips.com, there's been a lot of discussion about it.

Others will say it makes no difference, but you could disable XP's built-in cd burning. Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services->IMAPI CD Burning COM Service. If you don't use it and there are no dependencies (check first!), you can safely disable. Click on it and you'll see what I mean.

Okay, maybe it's time to see if your burner CAN burn DVDs or not. Get DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter (both free). ( Oops, you got Decrypter already. Oh well.) Rip one of your store-bought DVDs with DVDShrink and let it do its thing. When the backup dialog box appears, specify that an ISO Image be created, also tick the option "Burn With DVDDecrypter". Hard to mess up that method. If that doesn't work, you got a serious problem with : a) your burner, or b) your software environment.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Thanks again for being so helpful. I'm just in the process of putting thing back onto the computer, so there aren't too many programs on yet. I did realize after the 2nd message that I did have Nero 6 though. It came with the DVD burner. I never use Roxio. I realize it causes problems. After defraging and running anti-virus I tried DVDShrink then followed with DVDDecrypter. It turned out perfect! I don't know what the problem is with IC, but this will work. Is there a way to do more then 1 copy once you have the .iso file? I imagine you use the .iso file somehow in DVDShrink. I'm still a little confussed there, but I had a step by step print out. I know it 'll be very easy once I use it a few times. I could tell some of the setting from some of the other programs. Anyway I can't tell how much I've appreciated you help. I was really getting frustrated before you gave me advice.

  8. the "Access violation at adress 00000000. Read of address 00000000."

    4. browse to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VOB\CDRAPP\Paths” 5. rightclick on "SkinFile" in the right window
    6. select "rename" and change the name of the SkinFile entry

Thank you for your help. That looks like the solution to my problem with IC. I couldn't understand why it wouldn't work, but now it all makes sense.

I appreciate your pointing this out to me. Thanks again.

  10. If you want another copy, just open Nero and burn image ( the ISO you just made). Or use DVDDecrypter again in Mode->ISO Write. Too easy. Glad you got it sorted out.

Oh, many folks think that the latest version of DVDShrink yields quality comparable to IC. I used to have IC8 myself but decided it was redundant and uninstalled. :P

I just wanted to let you both know that everything is running smoothly now. Your solutions were perfect. SP2 was the reason IC didn't recogize the burner. I really appreciated your quick response. Thanks again so much.
