  1. I have an NTSC mpg file which contains an ac3 5.1 (6 channels) soundtrack.

I want the whole thing converting to PAL with the 5.1 audio intact.

I've done the video conversion part fine with Canopus Procoder2 but it doesn't support ac3 so I need to isolate the audio and convert it elsewhere.

Basically I need to extract teh audio, speed it up to match the new PAL video and put it all back together into a format that my software (ULead DVD Workshop 2) can understand. Althou DVDWS2 supports ac3 5.1, i'm not sure in which file format.

Is this possible with having to spend a fortune on more software?

    Many Thanks

Have a look at AC3Tool, it will extract an AC3 file complete, convert an AC3 file to WAV or MP3 and also has the ability to downmix a 5.1 audio file to stereo, surround, or other multiple channel audio

Its freeware, and does teh job better than some commercial offerings

Not 100% sure if it handles .MPG files though, no harm trying its a very small download and not as confusing as BeSweet

  4. ive done this with NTSC avis quite successfully

extract the AC3 from source using virtualdubMOD, then use besweet to extract the AC3 to 6 mono wavs, besweet can also shorten it for you at the same time if you want, then i used sonic foundry soft encode to remake the AC3 .... besweet can remake the ac3 for you but i heard its not very good quality but ive never tried it..

also i think besweet can (should) do the full thing in one swoop but its never worked for me

Softencode (or another CERTIFIED Dolby Digital encoder) is the way to go.

I am so sick of saying this I think I''ll make it my new signature-

BESWEET AND AC3MACHINE DO NOT PRODUCE DVD COMPLIANT AC3 FILES!!! IF YOU USE IT AND IT WORKS THEN FINE, YOU ARE LUCKY, BUT DON'T EXPECT THEM TO PLAY ON EVERY DVD STANDALONE!!!
I just needed to get that off my chest...

  6. Many Thanks guys.

I'm now searching for the elusive Soft Encode software which is proving quite difficult.

Can soft Encode speed up the ac3 file (all 6 channels). i.e I'm trying to avoid using BeSweet. Can't get to grips with the GUI...plus I have a Pioneer DVD Player!

Is there any other commercial software alternative?

  7. You will still need Besweet to convert your NTSC 5.1 file to 6 PAL WAV files. Softencode will then accept these without any problems.

Maybe I got it wrong, but why do you want to speed up the audio?
    Going from 30 f/s to 25 f/s should be a slow down.
Or is this a different NTSC source framerate?

  9. Thought NTSC (DVD film) runs at 23.97 and PAL (25fps) is always sped up by 4% which accounts for the higher pitch?

In that case, you are of course right. Here in Germany NTSC from TV series is normally played at 29.97 f/s.

OK here's what I'm doing...ripping the files from the AC3 with Hypercube Transcoder and then putting them back together with Sonic Foundry. Question though, this particular PAL source is Dolby Surround. Is there a way to rip only 1 file for the back surrounds? Or is that something I should worry about when I'm encoding?

Also, when it comes time to do a 5.1 track, should I just use all the settings when it loads up in SF Soft Encoder or is there anything I should change?
