Hello!
First determine your encoding bitrate that is purely based on the length of the original video & the destination file size. Use Ecuadors Bitrate Calcuator for this - it is very accurate!
Then load original into VirtualDub...
1) Using VirtualDub: Do a multipass - 1st pass encode, encode performance: standard. Under Audio: choose NO Audio
Also choose a suitable log file name / folder
2) Using VirtualDub: Do a multipass - nth pass, encode performance: standard. Under Audio: choose NO Audio
Ensure update log file is selected
3) Using VirtualDub: Do a multipass - nth pass again, encode performance: SLOW. Under Audio: either recompress or direct stream copy.
You can choose to repeat step 2) as many times as you want but a total of 3 passes as above should be adequate.
The above steps shoud result in the fastest encode time without going overboard on the quality.
The first step will result in an uplayable AVI - don't worry the hard work has gone into the log file!
For steps 2) & 3) the resulting AVI video file for each pass will be overwritten by the next stage.
The resulting AVI quality should be 97-98% of original.
AndyWork you bloody thing.... -
damn man. thanks. do u know any other programs that can do 3 or more passes? and how to do them?

Gordian Knot (the full-blown one) can do up to seven passes, and allows you the finest of controls over every aspect of the compression and filtration.
