Did 'SNL' Gaffe Expose Simpson Vocal Aid?

Sun Oct 24, 7:38 PM ET

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - Singer Ashlee Simpson's "extra help" may have been exposed when a "Saturday Night Live" audience heard her voice — singing the wrong song — while she held a microphone at her waist.

Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band for Sunday morning's incident, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show.

Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.

She looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.

Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.

"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV."

"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."

Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common — although almost always unspoken — concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.

Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making "Saturday Night Live" not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Geffen spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

This....to me....exposes ALOT of other people guilty of this crap. Of course the little teenie-bopper fans won't actually care or believe it. Britney Spears is probably THE most guilty of this crap.

I can never understand the public's stance on lip-synching. It seems like everybody knows that pop artists like Britney Spears lip synch their performances. While at other times, there is some kind of huge surprise when Ashlee Simpson is doing this.

I remember watching footage of various bands in the 60s and 70s who looked annoyed because they were FORCED to lip-synch and they tried to fool around and play their instruments in a funny way almost to bring attention to this. I guess this kind of performance\musicianship is largely gone as artists seem to gladly accept lip-synching as an easy way out.

Speaking of which, I saw part of a rap "concert" on TV a while ago and noticed that the guy was rapping over a recording. I then realized that all the rap performances that I had seen on MTV including Eminem and the like all had the CD going in the background. In other words, people pay to see these guys karaoke. What a world!

It's part of the forever-evolving world of TV - a lot of performers lip-synch at awards shows so they can dance better without heavy breathing coming through - what a crock ! It's really a cover up for the "we tweak this AVERAGE singer heavily in the studio" effect.

If I'm at a live gig and Metallica, The Offspring or Linkin Park start lip-synching, I'm outta there. For me, it's the roughness and the "balls n all" that make live gigs so good. I don't want it played or sung exactly like it is on the CD - I'd be better off staying at home and listening to the disc !
    If in doubt, Google it.

Metallica, Offspring etc etc are musicians....Britney and Ashlee are NOT. I really hate lip-syncing as well and I KNOW it is a big part of TV award show performances but when something is billed as LIVE and guide vocals are used...that pisses me off.
Britney and the likes just might as well take the $100 ticket for the concert and show her MTV videos and never even show up on stage.....same thing in my eyes.
    ALSO...
I'm just not as stupid as the Britney concert goers for one reason....I am a musician and can EASILY spot someone lip-syncing or using a guide vocal track.
I was watching Punked the other day when they got Pink....she actually told the cop "...I'm a musician....".....NO you are not....you are a singer.
To me there IS a difference. I'm a HUGE fan of talented singers from all types of music....but they are not musicians.

Who is Britney? Who is Ashley? Who is Pink?
WTF are you guys talking about?!

Since when rap is a music? Two or three chords repeated over and over again are called rhytms, rhymed speeches are either poetry or a political lemon - but it is not singing... so again - since when all of this is a music?!

Why are you surprised with people paying for lip-synched concerts played back from CDs? The very same people pay money to their cable co. and watch so-called 'reality shows' that have nothing to do with reality

And thx God so many people are like this
If everyone was smart and educated who would work for *me*
Please - more rap everywhere More Britneys/Ashleys/Pinks on tv
The more idiots around the better

if you only knew how much in auto-tuners and other vocal 'enhancements" are needed on some "stars" , you would puke ..

but some singers are quite good on thier own - pop stars like CA don't use "help" ..

btw -- it is in many tv shows contracts, that the singers are NOT allowed to perform live , this is even more so after the various fines ...

the FCC is really getting tough .. Disney and Nickelodeon were just fined 1.5 million for their childrens programming channels - for the type and amount of advertisng ...

    Exactly
"live" performance on a "live" show (which is delayed at least 5min since its US show)... it fits the "reality shows" that have nothing to do with reality...

  16. Top 3 teen pop stars I'd tap.

    1. Hilary Duff - Very girl next door beauty
    2. Delta Goodrem - I'd tap her even if Mark Philapousesese (what sort of name is that) would take Paris Hilton over her.
    3. Ashlee Simpson - Just like her older sister but not as stupid.

Remember when Milli Vanilli got caught lip syncing when their cd got stuck in a skip? That was the end of their career right there. Man things have changed.

I know it turned out that Milli Vanilli didn't even sing on their albums but no one knew that at the time and the lip syncing was still a big deal.

  21. I think it was more of a backing track then outright lip syncing in this case.

  22. Just watched the high resolution version of the performance.

It seems like the track was just providing back vocals because it doesn't have all the singing on it. The guys in the band are trying not to laugh though when they realise whats going on.

  25. I saw a Shakira show on DVD and she wasn't lip-syncing. Showed her back stage while changing drinking honey water and breathing oxygen.

I think they do it because most can't sing for shit and it takes them 8 zillion takes in the studio to get a decent sounding track....

Damn I'd love to find out. Hoping for Berber. Gag on Shag is not my style and seeing tile after the carpet is unwrapped doesn't leave enough for imagination. I'm a well groomed and trimmed kind of carpet-bagger.
