  1. How do i get my phillips to play subs? what format do they have to be in? Do i need to encode the subs permanently into the avi, or can i just burn the avi and the sub file on a disc? instructions?

    thanks

Although the guide with the player says that is supports multiple formats, SRT seems to be the only one that really works. I don't mess with DivX much and I don't have any DivX discs with subtitles, but I tried to create one and I discovered that while I made a mistake in the subtitle file, SRT will work if you make it correctly. Simply burn it on the CD in the same directory as the AVI file. It can have a different name - ie. MATRIX.AVI and SUBS.SRT would be OK.

On the DVD player browser, go to the subtitles file and then press the subtitle button the control. Then play the movie. You also need the newest firmware for subtitle suppose, 0531.

I think it can support text based .sub files (NOT the idx/sub files ripped by Vobsub as they are image based).

I burn my Divx files on DVD-Rs use Nero to burn and I burn in DVD-ISO mode and finalize my discs, if I burn in DVD-UDF mode the subtitles won't work, in the DVD browser the subtitle files will have a question mark on them.

I just use the .SRT subs ripped with SubRip. They work as described above.

One odd thing I've noticed is that if you fast-forward (or rewind, I think) while watching a movie with subs, it takes about a full minute for the subs to come back on.

edit: I'd also like to complain that the darned font is too small. I wish I could figure out a way to make it bigger.

i put the srt and avi on 1 cd. opened the cd menu, and pressed subtitle when the srt was selected. but the hand thing came up. the hand, meaning that what i'm trying to do is not working.

and how do i check and update firmware? doesn't that kill ur warranty?

  6. I've just bought a philips dvp632 and it does not play .srt subs. I tried to select it and press subtitle but nothing happens. I gave the .srt the same name as the .avi file and burnt it in UFD mode. It does work on my LG DV8700H divx player though.
Do I also need to update the firmware? And how can I see which version it's using at the moment?
Is there a difference between ISO and UFD?

I've found that going "to the subtitles file and then press the subtitle button the control" doesn't do a damn thing at all.

I read this somewhere and it's for Toast for MacOS—I don't know what similar options would be in Nero or other Windows burning software: The CD (I don't know about DVDs?) has to be ISO 9660, with "Append Version Numbers" option turned on. This gives the files on the disc something like ";1" after the name.

This is the ONLY way I got my DVP642 to read subtitle files.
    My A/V hardware: Sony 30" KV-30HS420, Philips DVP642/37, Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1, Comcast/Motorola DCT6200, PS2 SCPH-30001 (and it still works!)

  8. I've burnt in ISO mode and it works now but they tend to blend into the movie. The subs are small and white without a small shadow surrounding the letters, so if it's a bright seen it's really hard to see them. I've got the 1109 version 632/00. Are there still reliable firmware out there cause Philips has none one there website anymore.

Doing a forum search for "philips 642" should bring up some alternative firmware for this player that will help with the font and color of the subs (I know some people don't like yellow fonts but it does make it easier to see on this player). Also, once the movie has started, if you push the subtitle button a few more times, you'll see "encoding latin 2" which puts a grey box around the subs, and helps a little.

  10. Dude,

Use the DVP630/00 version 0112 firmeware from Philips. It will put a semi-transparent box behind the subtitles so that you can read them easily.

The only difference in the different versions of firmware are the languages supported in subtitles and subtitle appearance. The hacked firmware has larger white or yellow text in a semi-transparent box.

The firmware has probably been removed from the Philips web page because I've the new models are no longer able to be upgraded/downgraded. No reason to host the files if the players can't be upgraded.

You are my savior! Thanks for this information on activating the subs. I spent quite a bit of time thinking it was firmware, my burns, etc. this is all i needed!

I think i might check out my instruction manual to see if this was in there. heh.

    thanks again!
