I think something is wrong with VCD conversion in the most recent version of ffmpegX. Every AVI file I try to convert to VCD (mpeg2enc) creates an mpeg1 file where the video and audio tracks start off in sync but are a couple of seconds out of sync by the end of the film or episode.

This has happened with every AVI file I've tried. Converting to CVD works fine, however.

So, is this a bug in ffmpegX or is there a new codec out there that everyone is using that is producing flawed AVIs?

  2. Audio sync problems are often caused by encoding with a target framerate different from the source framerate.

Why is it that I almost never had this problem with older versions of ffmpegX? I would just drop an AVI on the app, check the framerate, choose the convert to VCD preset, let it run over night, and have a perfectly synced VCD.

With the current version of ffmpegX, 80% of the VCDs I get are out of sync. I've done nothing different. Drag, drop, choose preset, check framerate, encode. That's it.

The AVIs almost always have a NTSC film framerate (23.988), so nothing is changing there.

I wish I had an old copy of ffmpegX so I could downgrade.

Finding the matching binaries might be more problematic.

  5. I'd like to add a voice of agreement with Mildew's here.

I've noticed that I'm having exactly the same problem when converting avi's to vcd, kvcd, svcd and CVD too - while I've had 'issues' in the past with audio sync, I can't say that the problem has ever been as consistent as it is now.

I'm not bitching - I just wanted to let Mildew know that he's not on his own here.

  6. Unfortunately, without a precise report about a specific file, engine, and settings, working with a previous version, and not working properly with a newer version, it is quite difficult to proceed to resolution.

Here's a recent XVID file I tried to convert:

    VIDEO: mpeg4, 576x320, 23.98 fps. AUDIO: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 116 kb/s

VCD, SVCD, and KSVCD presets were all tried. All of them produced out of sync mpeg files. I tried disabling decode with Quicktime, but that made no difference. I don't use the ffmpeg engine because my DVD player doesn't like mpegs converted with ffmpeg, only mpeg2enc.

Only the CVD preset successfully converted the XVID file.

I re-installed the binaries to see if that fixes the problem.

  8. Mildew, try something for me if you have time please - quicktime was updated yesterday and Divx 5.2.1 was released today. I just downloaded and installed it (and QT) and then tried encoding an avi (that I've been having sync problems with) as a KVCD (using the default presets).

The resulting file was really crappy quality (for some unknown reason) but the audio was in sync for the entire duration.

If you have time to run a test encode, I'd be interested to see if you have similar results with a troublesome file.
