You cannot do it.
AVI is not DVD-Video format.
You need to re-encode, no way around it.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

You can have a look at the following link. I don't know if that will help you.

The Philips DVP642 is a DIVX player so I assume you are saying you want to write the file as a DIVX AVI.
You still have to re-encode to add borders but in this case it will be DIVX to DIVX.
I would use VirtualDub to do this.
- Load the AVI into VD.
- Select 'File Information' and take a note of the Data Rate.
- Select 'Video' -> 'Filters' -> 'Resize'.
- Make 'New width' and 'New height' match the size of the video.
- Tick 'Expand frame amd letterbox image'.
- Click Show preview.
- Set the 'Frame width' & 'Frame height' to the desired sizes (you will probaly want to make sure that the aspect ratio stays the same as the original so that the picture doesn't distort).
- Say OK to these settings.
- Now select 'Video' -> 'Compression' and select the DIVX codec, and set the bitrate to the same (or better still a little higher than the original to compensate for the extra black areas) - do a two pass if you wish.
- Now save the resized and bordered AVI as a new file.
.. that's one way. -
thx man.. that helped,... did everything u said.. tested, i see subs.. but there are problems... it seems like sometimes the audio skips(like a fuk up cd), and the audio does no go with the guy that is talking.. its all out of line... help?? also plz more info on Compression... need more detail

One minute you are using xvid, the next divx, which is it
In any case, it is most definatley the bitrate you want to change, that and playing time are the only things that affect filesize. Open the original avi in gspot and use the bitrate it reports in there when you re-encode. -
will it doesnt matter how low i go.. its still goes over 250mb.. my avi is 170mb... even if i put 0 its still over 250mb... but thats only if i put full processing... so anyone know why??

It seems to me that a couple of people are at least trying to help you. Don't be surprised if you get even less help now after a smartass comment like that! -

stop criticising others who are trying to help you
its not their fault that you dont know how to do this
alternatively you could attempt to use tmpeg to encode as a dvd or svcd rather than xvid
mpeg2 is an easier format for noobs to use than avi as you wont have to set the codec up [i say mpeg2 as mpeg 1 vcds usually look crap]
to add black bars
setting-> advanced -> clip frame -> arange settings -> centre or centre keep aspect ratio also you can crop the picture -
Hello!
I may be missing the obvious but a 640x480 AVI video *should* play perfectly on your Philips DVD/DivX player!
640x480 is a nice standard video frame size with an aspect ratio of 4:3.
I'm wondering if this is an issue related to your Philips player / TV. If your setup is anything like mine then you can muck about with settings such as NTSC / PAL / Automatic, set 16:9 / 4:3 / Automatic / zoom etc. etc. on both the Player AND the TV. Sometimes I have to play around with these settings to get the picture right. Get some of these settings confused and you will end up with the problems I think you are seeing.
Give this a try, you never know!
AndyWork you bloody thing....
