yeah, well, you know what they say about trying to make sense out of things like technology. LOL
I don't really know what they say but they have to say something cause the way things work sometimes is really strange.

Drop over to CDFreaks in the NEC forum and check out some of the burns on different media at different speeds. Some of the things u see are very interesting LOL.

Is it possible I am getting good results because I am using a NIL firmware meaning set up for overspeed writes?

Could be. I don't know if the Pioneer stock FW allows that kind of speed on that media but as long as it works .But i would be careful in doing too much faster since you don't have a real way to check the quality of the burns.
Or just look in Neweggs refurb area and get a Lite-On burner for 40 or 50 bucks to do some KProbe scans LOL.

As long as you get a smooth transfer rate you should be ok. You could go over to CDFreaks also and go to the Pioneer area and look at what kind of results in the KProbe scans people burning that media code are getting.
Some of those guys own like 8 different burners so they can scan them all.

Someone said there is no media to do 16x recording tests? I just saw three different brands of 16x+R media. Are they lying?

  5. I'll just mention again that I used to do all of my tests by doing transfer rates - I have over 100 transfer rate results screen captured of all of my early burns. I know, sounds excessive but I used to burn a lot of REALLY cheap media and saving these results was a good way to recall how a given media was likely to burn at a given speed, where the discs became unstable, etc. As I said earlier, in my experience a perfectly smooth transfer rate ALMOST always meant a smooth playing disc. However, I've had a couple of discs that had a perfect transfer rate test and I still experience occasional skipping, and those suspect discs turned out to have high PI/PO results. So I've switched to PI/PO tests for all of my discs, as they have been a much more accurate indicator for me. On my discs that have skipped, I can even see near the end of the discs on the PI/PO tests where the numbers increase sharply that correspond with where on the disc the movie is having problems.

Tommy, I'll go through the results over there. I have used the site some before, but I haven't looked at specific results. Thanks for the suggestion

Understood, I am hoping that those transfer rate tests coupled with actually playing a few of the discs with no skipping is a good indicator.

Yeah ,i just said in my first post in this thread that i saw the Verbatim 16x in a 25 disc spindle but was too cheap to buy it since it was 27 dollars LOL.

Maybe "lying" is too strong a term, maybe just "not aware" would be better.

@ steve2713- I could always tell that same when i used cheap media .It would skip and stutter near the edge of the disc alot and low and behold,on the KProbe scans the end area was major Pi/Po errors .So yeah there is a correlation in my experience also.

    16x DVD-R not available.
I forgot the original post was on DVD+R.
Watching baseball while posting isn't good.

Again, don't get too wrapped up on kprobe scans.
That's only one test of several that are needed to
confirm whether media is good or not.

Understood, I have a pioneer drive so there are only certain tests I can do. the extremely small transfer spikes I get are right at the point on the disc where the drive did its speed shift.

Great. But in the future, please lay off the caps. It's like shouting in a small room, and very annoying. Thanks

  11. Wasn't it C'T that showed current 16x burners actually burn pretty bad at 16x with current media? (considering at the time there was no 16x media to speak of)

Well thus far I have burned 100 discs of the 200 I have to have done by tomorow morning. And so far with spot checks I have yet ot get a bad one. I have been playing the last estimated 1 gig of the film and no jerkiness or skipping or anything.
