You don't say whether you're ripping music or software, so I'm moving this to Newbie/General forum.

Musicmatch used to let you rip at 128kbs mp3 for free with a nag screen. I don't know what the newest versions limitations might be. Worth a check though

The BEST quality, bar none, is to be found from Exact Audio Copy.
Now, some drives have issues with EAC, the author is overworked and underpaid (he gives it away for postcards), so your hardware may only marginally support it... but NO other program can match EAC's ripping capabilities. Period. End of story.

Use the LAME compressor to make MP3's... with the EAC recommended settings, it's fast and makes VBR 192KB MP3's that sound WORLDS better than the 128KB crap Musicmatch or any other ripper puts out.
