If u use the newest versions of Copy to DVD it will try to find an Optimum location for the layer break, preferably between scenes. If you are copying a DVD (of course a back up of your own collection), then i would rip it in ISO format and burn it in ISO format and the layer break should be untouched from what i've read.

I have 8 of the DL discs but i don't have anything yet worthy of using one on.

  11. at the price they are selling them as of yet it's almost not worth it do you really have projects that big (you can get most movies for less than the blanks)

    PCWorld, 5 for £30.

The quality of Sky Box Office isn't worth it. Just put it on a normal (4.3Gb) DVDR.

i mean it's not worth taking up 8.5gb of space, especially since we've all used 4.3Gb disks until now with no visual loss

Wait untill you have to copy a concert music disc with 5 or 6 different audio, angles, and extras throughout concert film disc you will really appreciate dual layer disc then. I Did 6 concert back up with great succes in copy to dvd, I would'nt back up music concert disc no other way!

Your best bet is to rip in file mode then use Copytodvd and burn, great success using this method

Yes, i've had success with that method also but to leave the layer break completely untouched so that there is no chance of CopytoDVD messing with the layer break, ripping and burning in ISO is foolproof and leaves nothing to chance. That was what i was trying to convey.

He's not backing up disks, he's planning to use the 8.5Gb disks to for film captures from sateliet TV. Completely unnecessary.

So if the answer is NO - It Cannot Burn A Dual Layer Disc - why has the conversation still gone in the direction it has taken.
I don't see anywhere in the post that says DarthBooker is going to buy a new drive and try DL burning.
It just looks to me as if people are giving him DL advise for a single layer only burner....maybe it is just my warped brain playing tricks on me today...

    Yeah, looks that way.

Still, it's research when considering buying a DL burner.

My burners were single layer with the firmware hack enabling double layer burning so If indeed there's a hack for his drive he'll be one step ahead of the game with the advise already given.

    I understand that.
I'm just making sure that he does not get the wrong idea and knows that he cannot use DL media on his drive as it is right now....that's all.
I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything...I just found myself confused by the conversation.
