    Hi,

I'm about to buy the latest Plextor PX-716 and it is my intention to transfer all the Video 8 analog tapes made with my old Sony Camcorder to DVD format.
Fortunately, my father-in-law has got a Sony Digital which can read the old Video 8 and in addition his camcorder has got a firewire port.
Since my MoBo is not equipped with a firewire port, I will have to buy a PCI card.
Having a look on the net, I've seen cards that range from 10.00 € to 500.00 €. Basically I don't want to spend lots of money for the purpose, therefore I've seen a "generic" card that includes 2 Firewire + 2 USB ports, ideal for me, given that I need some more USB ports as well.
Its price is 25.00 €, which is not bad for the European market.
When I come to the Firewire cable 4 to 6 pin, I also found a wide range of prices, from 4.00 € to 50.00 €!

My questions then: How much is the quality of the PCI card determinant on the quality of the Video 8 tranfer to my PC?
Same for the cable, a cable costing 4.00 € and another costing 50.00 €, I guess there should be a sensible difference in quality, or is merely the branding that makes the difference?

Looking forward to reading your comments.

    Thank you
    Alex

at the speed of video transfer (which isnt really all that high for dv) ... there isnt much - if all - diff. in cables ..

a good card just works better. the ads card always works well ...
    they are not expensive ..

a 500.00 € firewire card ? it must have something else also ..
