  1. Hi there. Newbie first post here so please bear with me.

I've just authored my first DVD using the demo verison of Vision Express 3 and I'm pretty dissappionted with the results.

The main problem was the picture quality but I now know that this was due to a poor-quality / low res source AVI. The other probems are:

    1) Menu background AVI soundtrack does not play in my DVD player, but it does when I play the DVD using WMP8. The background AVI is over 3 minutes long so I'm wondering if this is some kind of limitation in my DVD player? Have not tried it in another player yet.
    2) VE3 has introduced a lip-syncing error in the first 1/4 of the DVD. This seems to rectify itself. This is present when viewed on my DVD player and a friend's PC using WMP9. If I play it on WMP8 on my PC, the error is either not there , orit is greatly reduced.
    3) At the chapter change points, I get a momentary drop out in sound very much like the layer change on a commercial DVD. This is annoying because it makes my AV amp reset iteslf

A colleague has previousy authored a much shorter DVD using VE2 which playes fine on my DVD player. Unfortunately, VE2 des not run well on my PC (it fills up the hard drive with temp files during transcoding).

I could do with understanding what might be a bug, what might be a limitation or the hardware / software, and what I need to do to fix them. There's just too many premutations for me to test out.

Hope you can provide some pointers.

  2. Nero Express is known for being a poor quality mpeg encoder. I used Nero too, until I got tmpgenc 3.0, which gives great quality. It just gives crappy picture quality compared to other encoders. Try different encoder for better results.

  3. I tried NVE 3, and was disapointed.... The MPEG2 encoding was was not that awful, the problems I had, were a second or so pause on my stand-alone player at each chapter point, and some serious audio sync issues. Similar to your problems, (so it isn't just you! ). What attracted me to NVE3 was the simplicity of importing your AVI files, creating your chapters and menus, and leave NVE3 to "do its thing" overnight. It's just a pity that NVE3 doesn't "do it's thing" very well...

    NeroVision Express3 ?
Are you sure that is official version ?

    Official homepage offers demoversion NVE2:

    http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php

I've never had troubles encoding and burning with NVE2, so I suggest to download and use the official version.

Try to stay with automatic default settings and I advise you, being a newbie, not to complicate your job by adding video or audio to your menu. A picture background will do. Let the program to make chapters.
By the way, the default settings are:
Encoding: High Quality 2 pass VBR
Do not change that if you expect quality.

  5. Nero Vision Express 3 has been available for download for a few days now as part of the Nero 6.6 demo. It is possible that there are some bugs in it because oficially it is still a beta release.

I have seen a DVD produced using VE2 which does not have the sound dropout / chapter change problem, but that version has a different bug which fills up my hard disk with temp files so I can't use that either.

Gad its not just me anyway!

Yes, that was the problem several versions before, but that bug was fixed quickly and it does not appear in newer versions of NVE2.
Well, there are many other tools to do the job, but my experience is that nothing (so far) compares with simplicity, speed and quality of NVE2, when your source is AVI.
    Good luck.

  7. I find that using NeroVisionExpress3 to edit DVD+RW disks is VERY MUCH SLOWER than NVE2 importing disks to edit them. NVE2 Was/is fast in just updating a menu created on a standalone recorder.

  8. Ah, ok. I'll download the latest version of VE2 and try that as opposed to VE3. I was hoping not to have to fork out on new software to do DVD authoring when I have VE already.

    Hi Darren,

Please post here a few words when you try new downloaded version of NVE2.
I'm interested to hear if you encounter any problems.

    Thanks

  10. Hi Darren,

I'm wondering if you solved your Video/sound sync problem with NVE2 ?

I ask, because I also have just started using NVE2 and on the odd occassion I also get a sound sync problem.

However, I thought it may be a codec issue because it didn't effect all of the movies I was burning. Also, one movie that did have a sound sync problem was fixed by installing a AC3 sound filter.

Please let me know how you got on.

    Thanks
